The first rattle........ :(

My 3 week old 500 mile car has developed a rattle when driving over uneven / rough road surfaces - goes from a slight rattle to a drone depending on the type of surface (it's worse on that rough coloured surface used on some bends, etc)

Obviously I'll be booking it in, but I'm not sure how easy these kind of faults are to diagnose :(

Am I liable for diagnostic charges if they claim they can't find the/a fault?

Was actually going to take it to a different Kia dealer since I bought it some distance from home - shouldn't make a difference since it's a warranty issue, right?

check the boot and glovebox first. Its amazing how many strange rattles and knocks come from something in there.had a car once drove me mad with a strange buzzing sound,I searched everywhere and narrowed it down to inside the car in the backseat area. Finally found it was the seatbelt buckle was sitting on top of the back seat and just touching the plastic cover.
counting down the time I got left.:beer:

Think yourself lucky ;), my new Toyota had numerous rattles driving home from picking it up from the dealers.. Toyota, yes, that company "committed to quality".
Take it back to whence it came or a more local dealer for them to de- rattle under warranty. I did but my car's interior still sounds like a bag of spanners and a haunted house.:D The little strips of self adhesive foam they stuck in various nooks and crannies, storage box lids etc. have obviously lost their effectiveness.

Which, Toyota or Kia? I did drive a couple of Kia demonstrators (Ceed & Venga) last year with a few thousand miles on each of their clocks. Neither rattled and in spite of the interiors being even more cheaper and nastier than Toyota's (particularly the Venga) they did seem to be put together better.:)

The Toyota dealer sent out one of their techs with me to determine where the sources of said cacophony of sounds were located. Get the Kia dealer to do the same rather than one of them drive alone to return and say they can't hear a rattle/unusual noise?
These included passenger front airbag, top of dash front, instrument cluster surround, two front cupholders, passenger side upper and lower lidded storage, driver's side lidded upper storage, cabin filter cover etc., etc..

    Any car.

All cars rattle, it's a fact of life. Some people are more tuned to it.

This reminds me of an embarrassing incident with a Hyundai many years ago. I was convinced something was loose in the dashboard -- every time I went around a corner there was a "slooosh-clunk" noise coming from somewhere. Took it into the dealer, he was unable to locate it and offered to take the whole dash apart to search for the (very annoying) rattle.

On my way home I found it -- a bottle of de-icer under the driver's seat.....

Does it do it when you are just parked idling? If it does you might be able to find the rattle by pressing all your different bits of trim down and seeing if it stops. If you find the right one, stuff a bit of tissue down it in the short term and see if its covered by the dealers.

A car I have rattled like mad when I swapped the engine mounts and I had to remove the roof lining to fix it-it was caused by thin metal roof supports popping their welds but some silca sealant fixed it.
