Holding deposit - smoker?

If ALL rented properties now say "No smokers, and no pets"... surely there is a gap in the market to charge loads of money to rent out a place which ALLOWS smokers and pets? You could load the rental price by 50% for allowing this!!0

So you only ever spend any money on things that are good for your health? Must be very dull.
I live an extremely healthy life, yes. You may think some of the stuff I do is dull, I don't.
But i'm bright enough to know that I don't want to spend six quid a day setting fire to plant leaves and breathe the toxic smoke and then smell like an ashtray and have nasty, discoloured teeth and bad breath and cough like a sick person with disgusting phlegm in my trachea.
Each to their own though, eh?
If you think that smoking makes you less dull then go for it. LOL.Everyone is entitled to my opinion!0 -
Back when I smoked I never actually had anything in my tenancy either way to be honest - I worked on the assumption that it was a no-go so sat on the front doorstep to have one, but never smoked inside the house. Actually - I don't believe any of my tenancy agreements from the near-decade I rented had no smoking clauses in, and I did generally read them thoroughly a few times to check things like hanging pictures etc.
Can also smell and pick out the parents who smoke from their kids' reading books at school btw - the smell transfers that badly.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0 -
. . and pets stink the house out - although the owners don't seem to realise
. . and alcohol causes liver damage
. . and car drivers kill people - and pollute the atmosphere
. . and waste disposal sites
. . and nuclear power stations
. . and noise pollution from ugly wind turbines
. . and I don't like men in lycra - it's disgusting:eek:
. . and when the smoking ban came in, pubs had to find other ways to hide the disgusting stink that became evident
. . and , and, and . . .
the list of what disgusts people is endless . . . is endless . . . is endless . . .
If someone wants to smoke and they're not blowing it in your face whats it to with you? Too many people want to tell others how they should live . .0 -

Its everything to do with the landlord when the tenant is blowing smoke all over their property, discolouring the walls and ceiling, causing the carpets to stink, burning holes in the carpets when the ash falls, falling asleep with a cigarette and burning the property to the ground....0 -
I'm a smoker and from experience, your friend will find it hard to find a landlord that allows smoking. I always smoke outside. Even those that don't prohibit smoking will expect the property back in the same condition less fair wear and tear. Smoking stains/smells don't count as fair wear and tear and it's expensive to repaint, and remove all the smoke smells/stains from all the furniture and carpets, so your friend should either expect some hefty cleaning bills at the end of the tenancy or not to get much/any of their deposit back if they insist in smoking inside.0

Yes, these aren't usually a concern for landlords unless the tenant regularly uses a flux capacitor.
But I'm with you on the men in lycra, I'm going to add a new clause to tenancy agreements and I'm sure it would be upheld by any sane judge.0 -
