The thing is, if you have a business account and a cheque you pay in doesn't clear, you get charged, even if hte cheque is re-presented. I don't blame complanies for disliking them.0

Whether you use your PIN or you sign the data is captured. Using a debit card leaves no more information about your habits than paying by cheque. The only way to ensure some degree of anonymity is by paying in cash and even then a pattern will be detectable in where and when you draw your cash and how much you take.
The data companies can mine from credit cards etc is very interesting, you can see where someone shops the most and how often they visit competitors etc, for example Mr X mostly does his big shop at Tesco and gets top up shops from Sainsbury's, but goes to M&S for special occasions. Companies then use this to target their marketing, especially if you're using a retailer's credit card (&More, Partnership Card etc).0
