Becoming a cashless society

For a long time I have done my weekly shop @ Morrisons. I have always paid by Chq with a card, don't have CC nor do I believe in chip n pin.

Over the last few months they have been making it more & more inconvenient by insisting on time consuming measures

If the Chq is for over £100 - chkg my name against a list of known offenders (its a long list) before they will accept my chq - meanwhile long que forming all glaring at me.

Or chkg my chq against know forged chq types - same result, big Que all glaring at me.

Has any one else come up against such restrictive practices - lets name & shame

I see lots of stores do not accept cheques at all, and it does take longer than paying by cash or card. Most supermarkets have a cahspoint outside now. Cheques are outdated, like Videos vs DVD's it seems.

It doesn't seem that many years since people used to glare at you for using a card instead of a cheque or cash. How things have turned.

    hi conar686
giving your use of 'txt spk', eg ... chq, chkg & que ... you seem to have managed to embrace at least some of the more unpleasant aspects of modern society's technological advances

I'm sure given time you'll get used to chip & pin too ;)

Why not just use cash and save yourself the embarrasment?

I wouldn't dream of carrying more than 40 pounds cash on me when out shopping. Cards are such a good security measure in the respect too.

Totally agree with that - I carry very little cash with me - I use a Cash back Debit card, so its better than using cash.
  • Since I've been back in UK I hardly carry any cash.

Couple of months ago I paid by cheque in Sports Soccer because I couldn't remember my PIN, took them 5 minutes to serve me as they had to get permission to accept my cheque from a manager then phone to authorise it. Wouldn't have minded, but nobody explained what they were doing, or why and the total was £11.98

Good job my local chip shop still accepts cheques otherwise we wouldn't have had tea tonight :T
