penryhnThe reason I asked about wired/wireless is that wireless signals can suffer from interference, cordless phone base stations for example.
Neighbours wifi can interfere as well especially if they are using the same channel as you are.
There is a useful programme called inSSIDer which scans for this.
I'll see if I can find the line stats info for the Buffalo.
Is you router plugged into your master socket or an extension?
It's plugged into a master socket and I have those filter things on it and the extension. We do have a cordless phone with the base unit about 1.5 metres away from the computer but we've only had it for a few weeks. Before that, we had a non wireless phone.0 -

I didn't think there was any point as I don't have a TT router any more.According to TalkTalk exchange status none of TalkTalk's LLU equipped exchanges are congested so in theory you shouldn't get slower speeds in the evening. Please do check the exchange status and make sure your exchange is on that list, if it isn't then that means you are on a BT (spit) ip-stream service and it wouldn't be a surprise you get slower speeds in the evening

The TT and BT unlimited packages end on the 31st March so I haven't got much time to make up my mind. Is there any way I could check to see if BT's speeds would be better than TT?0 -

Doesn't matter if you've thrown away the TT-supplied router (which is garbage BTW)...you will still get help by the OCEs on the talktalk forums. But you do need your line stats from the router, without that the OCEs won't be able to do much. Did you manage to get the line stats from my previous post?
If (as i suspect) the issue is with your internal wiring/filters/modem etc then it won't make a difference which ISP you go with; you'll still have the same problem! Don't waste your money moving to BT.
I should also add that if might be worth popping over to your local PC World and buying a router such as this, you can always return it back to PC world for a refund if it doesn't make any difference. If that's too expensive then go for a Speedtouch st585v6 on ebay as they're legendary for long lines which is what i suspect you have.

Make sure the answers to the questions below are in your first post, this will save alot of time!
1. What exchange are you connected to?
2. How many telephone extension sockets do you have?
3a. Do you have an NTE5 master socket?
3b. If yes to question 3a, have you tried the test socket?
3c. If yes to question 3b, how long for and did you notice an improvement in your connection?
3d. Do you have an iPlate or ADSL faceplate?
4. Is your modem/router connected to your Master Socket?
5. Are you experiencing any problems with your phone service?
6. What modem are you using? (Make & Model)?
7. Have you tested with an alternative modem? (Make & Model)
8. Have you tested with a different microfilter?
9. Are you using a telephone extension lead?
10. What is your modem SNR Margin down and up?
11. What is your bandwidth (Connection or sync speed) down and up?
12. What is your attenuation down and up?
13. Are you experiencing the disconnections at any specific time?
14. Are you currently using Wireless?
15. Do you have an Alarms and/or Sky boxes connected to the telephone line?

Good idea! If you don't have your talktalk username/password to hand then call 08700 875562 from your landline free of charge to get this (automated). Also when you buy the Netgear router, make sure you keep all packaging so that you can return it in pristine condition should you decide not to keep it. Don't worry Pcworld won't ask many questions

Most wireless routers have 'Wireless Admin' turned-off, so to log-in you will need a LAN cable to access it.
Before you connect via cable, go to 'Start' and in the search/run box type 'cmd' (Vista/7) or 'cmd.exe' (XP).
When the MSDos window opens, type ipconfig /all
This will show-up a list of all the network ports on the computer. Scroll down the list until you see the one for your WiFi card, you then need to look in this section for an entry marked 'Gateway'.
This will tell you the address of the router. It might not be the 192.168.1.1 address listed above. If it is different, then in your browser enter 'HTTP://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx' where 'xxx' is the gateway address.Never Knowingly Understood.

baby frogmella - your link to the 'answers' was a great and I've managed to answer all the questions apart from 10,11,&12 and i'm sure I must somehow be blocking the 192.168.11.1 site so i'm going to try and unblock it. I do have my username and password but will wait and see what happens after I try the Netgear router. I will post the line stats as soon as I get them.

Just a thought, but how many server sites do TT have?. The reason that TT slows-down is nothing to do with the exchange and contention ratios (although LLU kit still has to share the same back-bone as BT kit).
Your point of connection to the internet is NOT at your exchange, it is at your ISP's server. This may sharing only 10Gb of bandwith on a 100Gb fibre-optic back-bone to the ISP's local BT exchange (not uncommon as data is charged 'per-kb', so if TT installed and ran a full 100Gb connection, you would be paying £156 p/m in service charges).
If every TT customer is online at the same time, then that bandwidth becomes overloaded and the whole thing slows down.Never Knowingly Understood.
