Thanks for your help penrhyn, i've tried again, using google chrome, internet explorer and opera but this is the message I get..

You tried to access the address http://192.168.1.1/, which is currently unavailable. Please make sure that the web address (URL) is correctly spelled and punctuated, then try reloading the page.

P.s. I've tried pressing F12 but nothing happens.0 -

There is a page within the router GUI that displays the line stats. Click the link below.
http://192.168.1.1
Click on Status at the top, then ADSL from the menu on the left.
If you are prompted to login, the username is admin and the password is admin.
just to chip in (i know nowhere near as much as penrhyn)- is the page a generic one, as this is also the page for the orange livebox router. i have been following these talk talk threads as i'm about to switch to them.....gulp.0 -
Go back to BT, £10 for more acceptable broadband & cheaper calls with the Heinz program through a BT line.
Whats your postcode/BT exchange or check on https://www.samknows.com as after the initial BT broadband contract if more than TT have LLU at the exchange you can renegotiate a discount with BT broadband as there is no Ofcom restriction on BT as your local exchange is no longer considered a "BT broadband monopoly exchange" by Ofcom and BT broadband retentions then can compete on broadband price as there is enough competition not just reselling BT Wholesale broadband with thier name/logo on your bills but provided by BTSO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe

It sounds like contention ratio (too many users) if it only happens in the evening.
How good an ISP is depends on who you speak to . .0 -

I would actually say ANY LLU supplier is better than a BT (spit) ipstream based service. Granted, the customer service varies hugely between LLU providers, but you are pretty much guaranteed line speeds 24/7 on LLU because they have ample capacity on their network. I was previously with Zen broadband (so hardly a cheap option) on their up to 8 meg service which is obviously BT (spit) ip-stream based, however my line speeds were reduced every evening purely due to exchange congestion...nothing that Zen broadband could do about that. Now with TalkTalk LLU for 6 months and get download speeds of 15meg+ 24/7. Customer services over the phone is shambles but their online support staff are very good. If TalkTalk are the only LLU supplier at your exchange and the thought of switching to TalkTalk makes you vomit, you could always go to a TalkTalk reseller such as Xilo.net or Vivaciti.net as these are niche isp's so they offer far superior customer services but you will have to pay more slightly. These ISPs even offer you standalone broadband on the TalkTalk LLU network so no need to move your telephone line over unlike going direct with TalkTalk. At the end of the day for purely the connection and speeds, TalkTalk LLU is far, far superior than any BT (spit) ip-stream based service

penryn - I can't find the TT router - hubby thinks he's chucked it out - Grrrr. Could be the wireless router if it's ok during the day? If I stay with TT I'll have to ask them for one of their own wireless routers.

I don't think so, as sometimes it says 'there is no connection' which of course there is.. I've been with TT for over 4 years and I can't say i've had any problems with them apart from the initial set-up and the slow speeds in the evening.
societys child -It sounds like contention ratio (too many users) if it only happens in the evening.
Definately agree - there is usually a maximum of 2 of us at any one time.
baby frogmella - thank you.0 -
diamonds -Go back to BT, £10 for more acceptable broadband & cheaper calls with the Heinz program through a BT line.
Spot on - my main reason for thinking of going back to BT is do they provide a better quality service.Whats your postcode/BT exchange or check on https://www.samknows.com as after the initial BT broadband contract if more than TT have LLU at the exchange you can renegotiate a discount with BT broadband as there is no Ofcom restriction on BT as your local exchange is no longer considered a "BT broadband monopoly exchange" by Ofcom and BT broadband retentions then can compete on broadband price as there is enough competition not just reselling BT Wholesale broadband with thier name/logo on your bills but provided by BT
It says the following services available are:
BT Wholesale ADSL
BT Wholesale ADSL Max
AOL LLU
TalkTalk (CPW) LLU
Sky Broadband / Easynet LLU
Orange LLU (Formerly Wanadoo
I found a site yesterday which said that BT was worse than TT. I must admit I was shocked when I saw it as I always thought TT was supposed to be the worst.
I also did a speed check yesterday and it said: Upload 0.70 mbps Download 1.77 mbps. Is this good or not?0 -
Linni,
According to TalkTalk exchange status none of TalkTalk's LLU equipped exchanges are congested so in theory you shouldn't get slower speeds in the evening. Please do check the exchange status and make sure your exchange is on that list, if it isn't then that means you are on a BT (spit) ip-stream service and it wouldn't be a surprise you get slower speeds in the evening.
Try accessing your router with these details:
type 192.168.11.1 in address bar
username: admin
password: admin
If you're still don't get anywhere give Buffalo support a call on 01753-555000 for details on how to access your routers line stats.
It's also worth posting on talktalk support forum, believe me the OCEs will sort out your problem
