How awful for your friends Hypno
When I lived at home we had a red bag and were told if we had to leave home in an emergency that it had to go with us. It contained all birth, death and marriage certificates together with wills, insurance and share certificates and much cherished letters (like the one from my big brother asking if he could name my sister). The red bag was a god send when Mum died and we needed to know information. As was her filing system for bills and bank accounts as we knew who we had to contact. But if there had been a fire and we couldn't have got hold of this information we would have been in a right mess.
How many of us have everything on our computers nowadays? Do we have that backed up? Should the back up drive be kept with the "Go Bag"?
So much to think about and none of us want to imagine ourselves being put in that situation so we tend to bury our heads in the sand

This has got me thinking too - I back my computer up onto an external hard drive. But they're both in my house - a house fire would get them both, and I'm sure most people are in the same boat. What do people think is the solution to that? Storing the external drive at someone else's house seems a bit ... extreme.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

Thanks Ellidee - somebody emailed me about this, and I ordered a £20 set of goods - they've already told me its been shipped! But I have no idea about their delivery policy - can't exactly answer the door in the middle of a session.
Sorry for the hijack, Hypno. Am reading up on go bags, after the disaster your friends have endured.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Sorry to hear about your friends Hypno, hoping that things turn out well for them.
I've been thinking a bit about this stuff too since I heard about a quite well known flute player whose flat was burnt down in the riots in Croyden (one of the top woodwind shops is in the same area and have been running a fundraising campaign to help her out). She lost all her instruments and music (her life's work essentially) and terribly sadly, her cats were in the flat too. Got me thinking about what I would grab if I had to.
As far as photos and other computer things are concerned, I tend to have copies on computers, on discs and saved online somewhere (Facebook and Flickr for photos, plus an Google Docs and/ or Dropbox for documents).Debt@16.12.09 £10,362.38, now debt free as of 29.02.2012."I cannot make my days longer so I strive to make them better."0 -
Thanks guys - Jo posted on my fb last night to say that they think their place will be ok, and to thank us all for our thoughts - she is overwhelmed by it all, of course, and I cannot imagine what it must be like over there right now.
And, squizz, you are right - natural wildfires may not be prevalent here, but we are certainly not immune from such disasters without warning as the riots, and things like terrorist attacks in London, have proved.
I don't want to be negative.....such things occur rarely...but it won't do any of us any harm to use it in our own lives a little. How many times do we talk about decluttering, or sorting out paperwork, but just don't get round to it? This shows us that there is a good reason to get off our backsides and to stop procrastinating for once!!
In other news, finally had the splint taken off my finger today - it is not great...still swollen and obvious bruising, but I have movement...albeit painful. So, we are hoping that a bit of use will strengthen it up, which will in turn reduce the pain. If no change in 2 weeks, back again, but I am hoping that won't be necessary. Such a lot of bother from something that happened so "innocently"!!
In money news - am skint.......spent too much on hols, and have spent too much in the first couple of weeks home. Damn you Hobbs bargains on ebay. Damn you Kaiser Chiefs, coming to my local venue. Damn you Dior for making me love your face products.
Still not having coffees though - so at least I have my Rome pot to raid in an emergency (as of course, all the above things are true emergency spends!!!).Successful women can still have their feet on the ground. Glad your friends are safe and as ok as they can be in the circumstances.
I have taken on board all of the info in the posts and am going to sort all our stuff out over the next month..it will take that long as have bits all over the place, lots of appointments to attend and my accounts to do..like you say there are many disasters that can happen.
Sorry to hear that your skint but sounds like you've had a good time x0 -
oh absolutely - and it is not exactly the same sort of skint that I have been in years gone by!!
