So glad to hear that your friends property was saved but how sad about their neighbours. It is when you hear things like this that life is put back into perspective.

On a lighter note. I went to see Bridesmaids the other night. It was laugh out loud, side splittingly hilarious. The cinema was in uproar. A true girly flick (although even the few men in audience were laughing). I would highly recommend it.

So....not such good news after all - the fire has changed direction again. I will be thinking of them all tonight.....the guys are all out there fighting the fires themselves now.....the authorities just can't cope with it all :(

Oh my god, what a nightmare for them .... and for you, thinking of them so far away.

I *was* thinking about you, and your friends in Texas, a lot today - I was getting a lot of fear coming up, and it got to ridiculous lengths. I gave my self quite a talking to, about what other people have to go through - just watched a documentary on a young Highland soldier surviving WWII in the Far East under horrendous conditions too - I have so much, compared to that.

Still, for your friends, its going on *right now*. Fighting fires to save their own home .... awful.

OH NO..that;s awful words fail me.I hope that they and their house will be saved xxx
  • hi hypno,

sorry to hear about your friends and I hope they make it through without any serious damage.

thanks for the reminder to sort out the important bits to grab - I was in a bizarre situation last year and had half an hour to take the things I might need to be able to set up a life elsewhere plus anything I had that I didn't want someone else to destroy or potentially use to steal from me.

I found all my documents quickly enough, took a week's worth of clothing and a couple of books I loved, plus my harp and my computer. But I wouldn't have known where to begin on photos/other memories etc so this is something else to think about. Most of my family photos etc are at my mum and dad's house but gradually I am building my own collection.

A friend's house was destroyed by a fire a few years ago - he said in amongst all the shock once they were out of the house, he was left dumbfounded by the kindness of the firemen who went round gathering photographs they could see on display once they realised the house was beyond rescue. He was so grateful to them as they are of course irreplaceable. I don't have any photos out and again this is something I hope to change over the coming months as I put my own stamp on my house at last.

Here's a link to a discussion on a "go bag", also known as a "bug out bag" from an American site: goes through a few pointers of the obvious stuff and things you may not have thought of.

That looks perfect - and something I will be working on over the next few days.

    Thank you!

As at 7am, their house was still standing as far as they knew, although they are only able to go on news from others.....it is too dangerous to go anywhere near of course. Since then, I am just waiting for news and keeping my thoughts positive.

thanks for that, Short-bird. We already have a 'legacy box' which is intended for the children to move smoothly if (or when) we pop our clogs but I can see it is woefully inadequate and will be working on the 'Big Book' over the next few days.

Hypno : I'm thinking of your friends. I hope all goes well for them.
But how can you know what you want till you get what you want and you see if you like it?
