Most of my 'jars' are on line - works well for me as its less tempting to spend. I have 'emergency fund' 'entertainment' 'christmas/birthdays' and 'car'. At home I have a change pot for the odds and sods which gets saved and put into the bank and I also have a change pot on my desk at work which comes in handy.
I dont have a great deal of will power and would raid 'real life pots' if I got the munchies in the evening!!! So its a lot safer in the bank and its really quite exciting transferring it all around.......I know I need to get out lol:oLBM March 2011 (what on earth took me so long?)overdraft (1) -2950 overdraft (2) -246.00total CC £12,661 :eek:loan £5000DFD 2016:eek::eek: (cant come soon enough)0 -

ive recently went back to 'piggy' banks. i always have coppers lying about, my nearly 4 year old finds them and gets soo excited and runs to put it in one of our banks, that are all labeled 'holiday fund'. and every so oftern he will count it all (soo cute, he counts up to 11 in order and adds in a few higher numbers too hehe) and tells me 'mum i think we have enough pennies now, so can we go on holiday today?'
oh if only it was that easy eh? lolLiving Simply, not simply living.Weight Loss - 5b/55lb

and dont forget, whatever method you use, jamjars, spreadsheets etc give yourself a HUGE PAT ON THE BACK when ,at the end of each month, you have managed to stay in the black and not in the red."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

i love the idea of the jars so i raided my recycling i have 4 jars my girls have made 4 labels food, holls, petrol and going out.im going to get a certain amount out each month and see how i go. put a certain amount into each jar i will have a mini statement in each jar with what i have in each how much and when money was taken out of the jar.
it would be nice if i can stick to it might be hard to try and not hand over the credit card and just use what i have in each jar:j0 -
as this has dropped down the Old Style board, and it's more a budgeting suggestion,i've moved it to our budgeting board.
Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. I do this but until recently had multiple savings accounts linked to main account...set up standing orders to go to each on payday. car tax/servicing, holiday, glasses, dentist, gas/electric, repairs fund, replacment items find etc etc. I have now combined them to one account to get a better interest rate and write down all amounts in a little book so I can see how much is in each pot. This way I earn interest on the pots of money and dont have to suddenly think about where money is coming from to pay for x, y, z.
I do still have a jar for pennys, and for £2 coins but havnt had one of these for months :-(0 -
My "jars" are in the form of online accounts too. I think I have around 9. Keeping the money in accounts ensures you are earning interest on it, plus is less fiddly (and takes up less room!).0

i do have an old jack daniels presentation tin that we throw 1ps/2ps/5ps in - was £26.02 yesterday when we emptied it at the coinstar machine (ouch! 9p/£!) which paid for a kfc
i also have a small pot in my knicker drawer that i chuck £2 coins in and use them to pay for nice underwear when ive saved enough up.
hi i am new to mse and have just been using this thread i read that acouple of you use coinstars to change your money if you go to hsbc you can use their machine just like a coinstar one but doesnt charge you for using it i have a bank account with hsbc and am not sure if you can do it without one but im sure other banks have these machines or wont be long before they do and they dont charge 9p a £ for using it,
