I do the jam jar thing and include by bank account in it. that is ,salary paid into bank account, direct debits total deducted ,the rest is money for other things,so I syphon off an amount into an ISA,this is for paying central heating oil and car tax,i pay it back into current account when I need to pay for these. the rest I spend as cash, stops a lot of impulse buys, jam jars are used for the various catagories,eg food, petrol, entertainment, garden, animals . i also put a small amount into a savings for emergencies jam jar.
I also have taken to doing what someone on here suggested,ie after everything else is paid for divide your money into 3,one part is for FOOD the next is for FUN the next is for SAVING. it works!it works!"The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0 -
I do this using jars and tins. I used to have 20p, £2, Bus fair savings (one bus company charges more than another so if I get the cheaper company I put the difference in a tin), multibuy savings (if I get 3 for 2 etc I put the money I saved into a tin), Sealed Pot, Roadkill, 1p, 2p, 5p (this saves me time because I don't need to separate when I count it lol), Home, Pets, Occasions, Housekeeping. Yes I have 13 tins
Now I put the coppers, roadkill and sealed pot into one big sweetie jar so it's gone down to 8 tins  But I have seen a couple of ideas for new tins
Methinks I have an obsession lol.0 -
I tend to put all my coppers in a 'Mission Box' for a Christian charity, but am most definately going to have to start saving some silver coins in the pottery piggybank my DD bought me last year, it's only smallish but it's lovely and says 'Gardening Fund' on the side. I also have another saving tin i saw/brought in a charity shop recently so i will start putting the odd coin or two in there if/when i can afford it. Must start getting back on course to paying off my overdraft.Grocery Challenge for October: £135/£200

I add coppers to a couple of old giant Nescafe jars - the one's made out of the thin cardboard will an alluminium inside and a plastic lid. I bore a hole in the top so I can slot coppers in. Inside I have moneys bags each with a pound in. I have about £45 pound. It weighs more than a couple of bricks. I'm looking forward to finally paying it into my bank account.
On a similar note, does anyone use those counting machines found in most supermarkets? What do they charge to use them?0 -
I am going to try the jam jars
can't be bothered with messing about with the bank
i already save coppers and every now and then put a pound in another tin
now to find some jars0 -
I've used the machines in supermarkets before when I've needed 'proper money' for shopping urgently or my coppers don't amount to straight pounds/five pounds. I think they change 8/9 pence per pound. Much better putting the money into a bank if possible.0

I have a coffee tin which I put everything under 50p in at the end of every day. It gets bagged up and paid into my savings account and helps towards Christmas - I paid £17 in this week. It also comes in very handy sometimes to have a supply of small change. I also have a box for 'findlings' ie. coins picked up in the street. I have no shame and will happily pick up pennies etc. Findlings so far this year amount to almost £15 ( the most ever in a year was over £105, so don't be embarrassed, it's worth it!)0

What is roadkill? I've got such a terrible picture in my mind of that particular tin. :eek:0 -

Wow, you must live in a place where people are very careless with their money! My mum has collected her findings in a jar for the last few years and never counts it until NYE. She's never made it past a tennerand is very eagle eyed. Still, it's better than nothing

I agree they charge 8/9 pence per pound
You can however use the self checkouts in the supermarket and pay with your 'loose change' and you won't get charged anything0
