I miss the middle aged, short haired lady with the sewing machine. She was pretty inspiring.

Much better than last night's offering of a top made from two scarves which apparently is 'stylish'! If that's stylish I'll stick to my boring jeans :D Draught excluders from old jeans would be good, except that the ones she made were too short - there were gaps on either side, so about as much use as a chocolate fireguard which has already melted! Two legs sewn together before stuffing would probably be more like it.

As it says, I'm not sure if everyone's so pi**ed off with the programme they couldn't be bothered to comment. My quick thoughts on tonight's first episode of the new show:
    • thank goodness the daft orange hat has taken a back seat, someone must be listening
    • shame they had totally replaced previous contributors with all young ones (except for the v popular mechanic). I think 'old' old stylers have a lot to offer but hey always had them giving some rather wacky tips in the last series.
    • I loved the family feature. I know from experience some people give their children treats after school every day such that they come to demand them but £10 a day!!! What I liked after they'd made the pirate stuff with things from scrapstore was that the child's comment was 'I love my mum'. Just proves that what's really needed is time spent with the children not money.
    • Am I the only one disappointed and surprised about how fat MrsM is? To me it looks wrong as it represents 'fat cats' (literally) but also suggests a lack of control and healthy eating. (Many apologies if someone is aware that Mrs M has a health problem).
    What do you think?
That you are being very judgemental.Maybe we should introduce a weight limit for oldstylers on this board, where's the roll eye smiley when you need it.

Seriously though, it doesn't matter what she looks like, if she can save people some money in tough times then isn't that what matters? It's Superscrimpers, not Britains Next Top Model....

Her size is absolutely irrelvant really. She knows her subject (although I do think Martin Lewis would be much better in it :D). Would you rather they employed a skinny model wannabe just for aesthetic purposes?

However I wasn't too impressed with some of her advice in the last series - having a stranger living in your spare room (as if most of us have spare rooms anyway), or renting out your loft space to store someone's tat.

I think this series of Superscrimpers is probably another I'll pick and choose from iyswim. I'd already done the jeans draught excluder years ago and yes one leg does mean its too short. As for the parents spending that amount every day on treats was just unbelievable, they either need to postpone the husband going back to uni or the wife needs to go back to work and the husband have a part time job. The gold thing was interesting, unfortunately I sold all my broken stuff last time I was made redundant. I was made redundant again 3 months ago, I wish they'd do a bit on nutritious meals on a shoestring budget.
CC2 = £8687.86 ([STRIKE]£10000[/STRIKE] )CC1 = £0 ([STRIKE]£9983[/STRIKE] ); Reusing shopping bags savings =£5.80 vs spent £1.05.Wine is like opera. You can enjoy it even if you don't understand it and too much can give you a headache the next day J

I think they might cover meals next week. In the trailer for next week, it showed some people being confronted with loads of empty pizza boxes etc and said something about showing them how much it had cost.

BTW - are people aware you can also bag up clothing and sell that? I took my 4-5 black bin bags worth to a place near me recently and got £12.

The car guy was wrong - cold, boiled water is not the same as distilled water. Distilled water has no minerals in it, but boiled water has them more concentrated as some of the water has boiled away! If you could gather the steam and let that cool back into water then that's distilled. I'm sure his tip could end up costing people a lot of money.

I personally found it a bit concerning that they're advising people, who probably don't know that much about the contents of their car bonnet (such as myself), to go around putting water into an electrical component in their car! Now, I don't really know much about cars...but I imagine it ain't healthy (for the person or the car!!):(

The scrap store looked really interesting but when I looked it up I found that the ones near me only sell/give to schools and community projects. However there is a very narrow shop front for a rag shop round the corner from me. They buy old fabric by weight but I might see if they will sell me some scraps.

The forager went on a bit much for me, it would be interesting to hear about growing up foraging as they do in Eastern Europe.

Mrs M and her weight. Hmmm I do see the "fat cat" image- works for FT, dressed very smart, well spoken etc and I personally find her a bit snooty but that is just me! I do struggle to take some of what she says seriously as she comes across very well to do as if money saving is all just a bit of fun to her. If she was giving out tips on healthy cheap meals and walking/cycling rather than driving then I would imagine her to be a bit slimmer but it's not as if she writes and lives by every last tip on the show.

I was amazed at the amount this week's family seemed to think it was quite normal to spend on days out and treats, although I think a treat is something you have occasionally or it's not a treat. The mother was buying stuff for herself really, not her daughter.

I was urprised how well she did making the party decorations.
She must be a creative person and I'm sure if she continues she'll get much more satisfaction doing this sort of thing rather than shopping.

I took my old bits of silver and gold to the dealer today and came out with £320! I didn't get quite as much per gram for the gold as they said on tv the other day - just over £9 - and some of it was only plated, but it was either sell it or just have it languishing forever in the bottom of my drawer.

Just a quick post, I wish they would look at people on low wages trying to manage and not those who foolishly spend, spend, spend on higher wages, and the same tips seem to be repeated or is it just that I have read them on here first!!! Long live MSE:) its the best
