i did a class in upholstery at night school and thought the stuff they did was horrendous, as for those stupid little bags they made and the friendship bracelets - well, words fail me!

What a waste of a pair of jeans! They looked to be in quite good condition and all to make that daft bag!

I was expecting this program to be alot more interesting. They got a few little tips in between but nothing for me to go waw about yet.

  • I have noticed through this thread rather personal comments about the physical appearances of those appearing in the show.

To ridicule the quality of the tips and comments is one thing.

To ridicule others because of their appearance is completely different.

Whilst I agree with the comments about shaving heads at home would seriously save some money, as would learning to wash and care for any weaves at home, even doing each others. I really fail to see the need to ridicule their choice of style, even Mr 'Hairband' from last week.

    Just saying.

I'm not sure about the plant spray made from rhubarb leaves-don't they contain oxalic acid? The man who made it implied that his spray was safer than the stuff you buy but I'm not sure about that.Oxalic acid is quite toxic.

I'll get shot down for this :D

I've learned some bits from the show (shock horror!). I know the mechanic winds a lot of you up, but I found the episode where he taught the girls basic maintenance very useful. I suspect many more people who watched it found it useful as well.

What we have to remember here, is that the vast majority of the population are not MSEs. That's why this programme is (to us) so basic and doh!

The vast use of bicarb, vinegar and lemon is to teach people to avoid so many chemicals. Surely a good thing? The same goes for recycling clothes - it's to give people ideas and inspire them to do something different, not to copy the exact same thing.

People are very different (thank goodness), and we should be embracing that, not criticise everything they do (incl looks). Just because they behave differently doesn't mean they're less deserving of help.

If the show still really annoys you, I've got two suggestions: Turn the tv off or write to ch4 to let them know what kind of programme would be more useful. No point in just talking about it here ;)
  • Bicarb is cheaper when bought in bulk, not the silly little tubs from the baking aisle, look for it on sites that sell supplies for making bath bombs

I think the only thing I can say I learnt form this series was using a metal kebab skewer to do jacket potatoes in the oven! Never thought of that before for some reason!

I chuckled my way through last nights episode, especially about the tomato sauce. Now I grow a LOT of tomatoes to make my own pasta sauce and jar it, but that was a waste! I buy value ketchup for 30p, it lasts ages in the fridge and I dont have to defrost it first!:rotfl:

Oh, if only we could make our own show! The UK would have a bit of a shock!:p

The tub Barbara was using was T3sco's - 83p for 200g. If you have a big Chinese supermarket near you (Like Sing Fat), I have seen mega bags in there, but I could never carry them :)

I buy my bicarb from WingYip, in 3kg bags. It is cheaper to buy their box of 5 x 3kg bags, which was about £5 last time; singly I think they sold for around £1.50. (Note, I'm still on my first box load, so haven't unit priced this in four years. I'm just about to open the last bag.)

I also get my vinegar from there. Pride brand distilled white vinegar in the 5 litre bottles. Again, I get them by the box (£5 for four). One bottle lasts me about 6 months. If I remember correctly, a single bottle sells for £1.95, instead of £1.25 when sold by the box.

  • Well a vote for the programme from me!

I must agree that perhaps this kind of show is not really for us die-hard frugallers but I find its nice to come across things that I know I should do but havnt done for a while. Its entertaining and I have noticed in the office people who cant even spell the word frugal are wanting to try some of the tips so it must be getting the message across.

Also I must admit I watch it cos it makes me feel very smug when you see these people spending vast amounts of money when they simply didnt have to and found much cheaper alternatives.

Its never going to please everyone but it covers a broad spectrum and even if you only come away with 1 good tip its worth watching.

Perhaps they could branch off with shows just devoted to either cookery or crafts?
