Shame we dont see the likes of our own Ilona who actually DOES live a frugal lifestlye. I watch it so I can sit there and say been there. done that , ben doing that all my life, etc etc
Trouble is, Ilona's been on telly quite a bit - but I quite agree, now she's someone I can really learn from. She may think she's the Queen of Mean, but she really isn't, mean people aren't as generous as she is!
However we don't want fame going to her head, she'll be on I'm a Celeb if we're not careful, cutting worms in half to make them last another meal. Ilona is a total inspiration, some people are just like that. A bit like 'Should be out gardening' on another thread - the sorts of people that make me want to go out and try their tips and hints because they make total sense. Not this daft lot. When you know something about a subject, it makes you realise how shallow and poorly researched tv programmes are. But then they're just designed to entertain, not educate and inform any more.

Hi, I'm here, that's my real name bye the way, I'm also known as Meanqueen on another forum. No I'm not mean as in the general sense of the word, but I am mean with my money when shopping. I want things as cheap as I can get them. I eat mainly yellow sticker stuff reduced to a few pence, and I buy out of date food from a cash and carry. I don't put my heating on, I wear more clothes around the house. If I need something I try and make it out of recycled stuff, or I buy it from a car boot sale or charity shop. As a last resort I might use a shop, but I search for the best price. I skip dive, can't walk past one without looking in. I forage in the hedgerows, and grow my own veg.
The reason for my frugal lifestyle is so I can afford to enjoy my retirement. I go on walking trips staying in Youth Hostels, I love walking and it's free. I write about all this on my blog.
Thank you for your kind comments, I was on the last four programmes of the first series of SS, and also Hunt for Britains Tightest Person on Channel 4.
As for this latest series, I am of the same opinion as most of you, judging by the comments on here. Some of the ideas are what we already know, or daft. It seems to have gone off in a different direction, the 'army' they have now appear to have no need to scrimp at all. As for spending more on ingredients to make something rather than just buying the cheapest ready made, as I said, just plain daft.
I can't understand why anyone should have left over red wine, for Gods sake just sup it. And the daft woman who wore a decent cardy to paint in, then had to sew patches on the sleeves, well that's bonkers. Hasn't everybody got a set of slopping around the house scruffy clothes to wear for a messy job?
As far as I can see the programme is not much use to us frugalists on here. We live in the real world where we have to watch the pennies because we haven't got many to spare. A lot of people trying to make ends meet working at two jobs and a family to keep certainly don't have time to faff about making things, they need the cheapest and quickest solution. My money saving tips might be a bit whacky but they do save me money, and I'm still wearing boys pants, they never wear out.:rotfl:
Lots of love, keep up the money saving.

Just to say, I'm now reading through Ilona's website, and can predict NOTHING is getting done in this house today! It's absolutely brilliant, she's gorgeous. A very clever, very entertaining lady. Going to enjoy my reading now!0

I just watched it on catch-up and if that chap was my OH I would give him his marching orders Daft begger, diddums have nasty milk as a little boy then, he should grow up and get himself a life. The wife looked like she would happily throttle him given the chance. I don't know how she didn't tell him to sling his hook.Throwing good food away is criminal and talking as though down branding is something to be ashamed of. I would love that pillock to go and live for a week in a third world country on a dollar a day he would soon lose his airy fairy ideas. This programme seems to be getting dafter by the episode.
That soppy mare who did her painting in her favourite cardi wants certifying.I have an old tee shirt and pair of joggers that are kept (paint spattered over the years)specifically for painting in.Didn't her cardi look awful when she had patched it up. I would have binned it by then patch and all.As for the hints about buying a train ticket, last year I was looking for cheap tickets to go to Liverpool and saw how much I was quoted on The Trainline site and went to my local station and asked for a quote from the ticket chap and he got it down by about thirty quid from the online quote.I think its a case of research what you want before you buy. Most of the folk on the programme look far too well off for my likeing and none look like they are in need of saving anything. That mechanic gets right up my nose is he for real surely anyone knows that if your washer water isn't coming out then the jets are blocked and no one in their right mind would pay £65 to unbung them, and shoe polish on the car door ,great when you get some on your coat or clothes getting in and out of the car.0 -
