I've just read through all your comments, and I have to say, I agree with you. I thought it was a load of tosh, couldn't find one bit of usefull advice on it. Didn't tell me anything new. And as for dying old and worn out baggy knickers....for goodness sake woman, start wearing boys/mens pants, they last for years and never become baggy, and if you haven't got much up top don't even bother with a bra.

It's been done better - Alvin Hall anyone?

However, like a previous poster, I was shocked at the number of ATM receipts they managed to pick up - you have to choose 'cash' or 'cash with receipt'. I always take the receipt because I take it home so I have a record. Why would you choose 'with receipt' then drop it on the pavement?

Said nothing useful about 'normal' people - either crazily mad overspenders or crazily mad scrimpers. Very few people would look at any of the participants and think 'that's a bit like me'. The usual going all out for shock value. Also not even looking at why people overspend!

Much prefer Bank of Mum and Dad myself. Or the show with the balding psychologist and the nice lady who helps you draw up your budget (can't remember the name though!)

Thanks for posting that reminder larmy, I have looked at the clip from the original Scrimpers. As you say, much better, though I do think the man who collects is a bit over the top with his shed load of stuff, but I know where he is coming from. I have a shed full of pallets, ha ha.

There's a family on a big combined salary. Good for them. They're over spending. Why?
Not enough facts or figures were really given, and you're not going to tell me they can blow over £100k a year on takeaways, occasional dresses, and an uneconomical car.
The scene in the garden was very reminiscent of someone else's show. Alvin Hall, I think.
But while he would say "each one of these objects is £100 you're spending, that you don't have", this wasn't quantified properly.
I'm no more knowledgeable now, as to whether or not they solved their debt problems.

The elderly tips seemed a bit bizarre to be honest.
Grow your own veg? Assuming we have a garden at all, how many carrots does she think I can grow in the 3m x 5m plot that is my new build's garden?
Coincidentally, this is the biggest garden I've had in my 10 years of renting.

Sew a new sleeve onto your sweatshirt? I've never had a sweatshirt with a sleeve that looked anything like that.

That tea tray was hideous before, and hideous afterwards.
It would certainly get visitors talking though.

The lady of the manor had her kitchen rearranged. The table was blocking her from using the washing machine. That distracted me a lot during her bit.
And instead of paying 11p per bottle on homebrew, you could always take the radical solution of drinking less.

Piggy banks cute and good fun for children, but not great for young adults. I do almost all spending on credit/debit cards, and my friends do the same. I hardly ever withdraw cash in the first place.

Not sure what the average person would take from this. There was nothing about budgeting. They took the family from overspend, to no spend, and didn't really see what changes they'd made for the long term.
They mention ISAs, say you've got 5 days before the deadline, and not really talk about what makes them so good.
The visitors here won't take much from it, but it's not as good as things like "Your Money or Your Life", or "Bank of Mum and Dad" for showing people tackling massive debts either.
  • hmmm, how to be moneysaving

have a 30 acre piece of land, and dye your undies :T thank you channel 4, now we all know where we are all going wrong

If the woman with the land, has got 30 acres, why has she got such a large backside and look like she was out of breath from a short stroll.

I think this programme fell way short of what it could have been. Martin needs to do a better one me thinks!

Yes - his show was brilliant.

I agree with both your points - and I like both those programmes, too - but can't remember the name of the one with Jay Hunt and psychologist either :o

His programme about moving down to own brands and value brands in the supermarket was better than this load of old tosh!

What a poor, poor show...

    - a family with £108k annual income...
--- yet unable to figure out that 4-5 takeaways a week is expensive?
--- husband drives a 2.9L car yet seems to travel 50k miles a year...
--- A wife who buys and buys without limit...

How the heck can a family on circa £5k (after tax) manage to still overspend by £2k a month?

    - Thrifty tips - useless, dying old knacked underwear, a heavily obese woman with 30 acres of land and a farm being self sufficient....how useful is that to the common man (or woman)?

SPENDAHOLICS was a much better show and offered better advice.

This programme seems to have been created to patronise and "entertain" the public by showing us idiotic families with more money than sense, and daft old biddies with nonsensical "tips".

Lets hope the makers of this programme are reading this, and will take note of all the remarks, and try harder next time to get it right.

I thought it was a very dull programme - how is it cheap to dye old underwear? (where do you get this free dye from?) Getting pretty tired of programmes that treat moneysaving like it's something only eccentric people do.

Thanks for reminding me about Alvin Hall - his programmes were really good.

Like most folks on here, thought the show was rubbish. And the Brummie family were a joke, there are enough of us Brummies struggling that they could have helped to have found a family situation that would have been recognisable to most folks in the UK. That's 30 minutes of my life I'll never get back again. Would rather spend it on here, learn more than I did in that show. Wonder which band wagon C4 will jump on next?

Re Mrs Moneypenny's clothes style and the comments on her clashing colours, I think more by accident than design, she's actually right on the money. Vile as it sounds, clashing hot pink and coral are hot colours for forthcoming season.
