  • I watched this with an open mind ... and was unimpressed. I am not particularly OS, either.
I liked Yvonne. She's funny, especially her smalls.

When your underwear has gone a horrible grey colour, it's either new-ish and you just aren't washing it properly, or it's old and worn out, and won't be supporting your assets, so you'd be better off with new, unless you want your assets round your knees :p
what a crap programme two overweight annoying buffoons. You would think if she had all them acres of land she would be as thin as a rake..

Hmm, can't help but agree - she could probably live off herself for a while. And having chickens doesn't mean free eggs ...

Judging from the prices around here it would be very difficult to buy a takeaway for a family of four for £10- £15-£20 would be a more realistic figure.

    Same here (London).

I reckon posh, chubby lady might have bartered a fair bit with her neighbours. I suspect the point wasn't that she was totally self-sufficient but that her actual cash outlay per annum was absolutely minimal. Did they actually mention a specific sum on the programme? I can't remember
  • I am old enogh to remember a channel 4 programme from the 80's called "scrimpers" (I even bought the book that went with it) it was much more the sort of programme you all seem to have expected.
I don't think anybody will really learn from last nights programme because it didn't give enough detail on how to sort out a budget, surely the first step needed to stop an overspend.
Still I will watch next week and live in hope.

I think that this was a real wasted opportunity; there are thousands of people out there, (us lot for a start!) who have loads of great ideas for saving money, making things last, wasting less etc, but in a down-to-earth and normal day to-day way. I appreciate that the programme makers want to make it 'interesting', and agree that sometimes it takes extreme examples to make people sit up and take notice, but I don't think the target audience would have been particularly helped by seeing people who are self sufficient with 30 acres, and a family with a massive income who overspend by more than most of us earn. How many titled ladies with tracts of land at their disposal and families who earn well in excess of £100,000 do they think would have been watching? Maybe next week they should just tell everyone to log on here - much more useful!!

When I heard that that lady had 30 acres I didn't think "Great! Loads of free/cheap food! Lucky her." I thought "Crikey, I bet that's a lot of work." Although she didn't look robust or strong enough to be harvesting a couple of meadow's-worth of hay on her own with a scythe but you never know

Nobody would be. If there is a crop of grass she probably sells the crop ''standing'' or has an arrangement where she keeps the hay she needs and whoever cuts it sells the rest....or just a simple financial transaction.

Its surprising but IME lots of rural dwellers are less fit than our urban friends. Many of us get cars EVERYwhere because almost everywhere is out of walking distance. If its away from home you get in a car. Worse now that so many eople have quad bikes. I know someone who uses a quad to get about 800 yards between barns:eek:

TBH, I'm not sure I look any different to her!:o:D

I was a bit worried about her casual acceptance of chickens free ranging over the road, people whizz round rural roads and chickens don't get out of the way quickly! Mine were getting out all the time after we moved last year and I was mortified. (I notice some one in the village lets theirs ramble on the verges of a reasonably busy village road though perhaps I'm over protective)

Was anyone else disgusted by the methods used to 'shock' the family into realising how much waste they are generating! How ironic to actually create that waste again en masse for the benefit of the show!! How wasteful! It is going to be a regular feature too if the trailer for next week is anything to go by, ggrrrr!

I only take out my grey bin once a month and that is only because it starts to stink-not because it's full!! We are a family of 2 adults, 1 teenager and 1 kid as well do seeing this much pointless rubbish recreated makes my blood boil!!!!

I think we were never going to find the programme useful as most of us do it already and much better;):) but for those people who live way beyond their means and waste so much I think it might make them think a bit.

I'd like the tips to go into more detail and to try and help an 'average' family who are struggling.

I remember the original Scrimpers programme and it was much better.

I watched this thinking 'oh great a tv program for us low income earners in the Midlands (and elswhere) so we can save money and stretch our money a bit further' and what is it about - a daft woman who wants to become a celebritiy by being eccentric and a family of overpaid idiots who certainly arent in the Midland wage bracket and are complete wasters.

And as for the woman with all that land, chicken etc - what was the point of that?

Who really wants to see all peoples waste heaped up so they can be 'shocked' into changing.

Waste of time so wont be watching that again.

    Get real channel 4.
