  • First of all - i'm sorry to hear about your situation.

I suggest you contact one of the banks and ask if you can open a basic bank account... I've just opened one with Barclays and they provided me with my account number and sort code there and then, and once my card and everything else was through I had to go back in to have it all activated, this was 1 week later so it doesn't take that long. But once you have your account number and sort code you can contact the relevant departments to have your child benefit paid into.

Does your husband work? If he does and you are still living in the same house i'm not sure if you will be able to claim income support.. but it might be worth a try.

You might also be able to claim child tax credits. Give the turn2us benefit calculator a try, it gives you an estimate to how much you are eligible to claim, then you can get all of the relevant claim forms and send them off ASAP.

    Hope this helps.

    All the best,

This is going to be a pretty hard case to prove OP. Seek advice from the CAB, however if it was me I would be out the door quicker than my feet could touch the ground.

A change of locks and plastic bags full of clothes spring to mind straightaway.

You have the children, get rid of him. You stay in the house, its what any court would grant you
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.

Sorry to hear about your situation Jani. Wat an absoute idiot your husband is, how are you supposed to look after the children with no money !

I agree about opening a bank account, I would do that today and then call child benefit dept and start getting that paid in and at least you have something .

Is your husband paying a mortgage or do you rent?

I dont think you will be entitled to any extra tax credits because you are still living together.

Do you still do his washing?
Do you still do his cooking?
Do you still sleep in the same bed?
Do you still do things as a family even though you have "split up"?

These are the type of questions you are likely to be asked, if you can say no to the above then apply for Income support, child benefit, stop the joint tax credits claim and apply for child tax credits and apply for child support.

The Shelter website has a section on relationship breakdown which outlines basic rights and responsibilities and options. It has links to websites that deal with separation and divorce, too.

Looks to be an interesting thread brewing, sorry to the OP to hear of your situation, it seems both parties have rights though, it won't be an easy road ahead that's for sure :(

If he is claiming the CB in his name rather than yours, then you are losing out on credits towards your pension. Even if you weren't splitting up, you should get this changed.
