What about incuding some nice hand cream, showel gels, moisurisers, tissues etc.

For foods I'd think about nice mini-jam pots with some scones, biscuits, a cake, posh chocs, cheeses & cheese biscuits, individual deserts, a nice steak or ready meal.

Depending on WHY she is normally quite frugal, I would perhaps include luxury versions of basic foods she eats, as well as a few 'finest' instant meals to go in the freezer for nights when she doesn't feel like cooking.

Nice meats would be things like fillet steak - it is expensive per kg, but a little goes a long way, I would probably get around 200-250g for an older lady for one meal, more for a greedy guts like myself! Luxury sausages are always a treat, try the ones with apple in them.We normally have 3 sausages each for a meal, she may be ok with 2 depending on her appetite. Lamb, if she likes it, can be a treat meat. A small roast or some decent chops with a jar of mint sauce might be nice.

Cured meats like good quality salami, proscuttio ham etc are also a nice treat and can last longer than fresh meats. As others have suggested, smoked salmon can be wonderful if you like it - include some nice bread or something like blinis, philly-type cream cheese and a lemon (for juice) to eat it with. Other delicatessen items like olives, artichoke hearts, peppers etc might also be appreciated.

What desserts does she like? A sticky toffee pudding with extra thick double cream would be my idea of a heavenly dessert. (but don't go for the Tesco finest frozen one, we got it for Christmas and it was disappointing.) Perhaps cake might also be appreciated?

Like the idea by the way, if my Mom didn't live in a country without internet shopping I would steal the idea!
    Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!
  • Great idea!!

.... How about adding a few magazines to the order.

The essentials are always good too- I know my parents appreciate a present more that's useful (as they see it). I have no idea what to buy for Mothers Day- will go shopping tonight.

Thanks everyone, lots of great ideas :D

Babyshoes - she is frugal through necessity as she is on a very small pension nowadays so I think luxury versions of the type of thing she normally eats is the way to go. She is very practical and if asked what she wants for Xmas / Birthday will say things like 'a new potato peeler' :rotfl:

    So far I have:

    Fillet steak
    Smoked salmon
    Posh chutney
    Schloer
Finest meal deal thingy for dinner that day
    Chocs
    Blueberries
    Raspberries
    Grapes
    Posh bread
    Posh soup
    Posh cheese
    Scones, posh jam & cream
    Magazines

Little bits of toiletries? Like a nice bottle of shampoo and conditioner, bubble bath, body lotion, some cotton wool buds/pads, make-up remover (if she wears make-up obv!) lip balm etc?

Nope, well kind of but No still! She's in her late 60's but still does things like white water rafting, abseiling etc if the opportunity arises!
