I had an awful time at the Jobcentre on Thursday... not only did the bomb alarm go off and everyone had to spend half an hour in the rain, I wasn't on the list and was ignored for an hour before finally someone saw me. I realised this morning that they didn't ask for any of my documents apart from my ID and my CV... I was so desperate to get out I didn't even think about it, so I will need to call them on Monday. I am not happy... I have decided that I am going to close my claim when I sign on next, I am off to France for 2 weeks so have to close it anyway, but then I am only back for a week and a half before I go away again. It's just not worth the hassle... I have also managed to find some work online which will pay better than JSA anyway. It's kind of annoying about how I was treated, as technically I'm entitled to JSA but if they can't even deal with my claim what's the point. In fact I think I am going to put in a complaint. :wall:
  • Hi all,

Just an update from me. It's been a month now since I left work and things have been very hectic!

I've pointed the outside of my house, worked on 4 other peoples houses doing plastering jobs and currently have the guys in tiling our bathroom which has had a complete overhaul. Life feels a bit strange without a job and it's now time to pick up the pace a bit and hopefully get something sorted.

I've spoken to several people in the construction trade and all of them have told me to stay clear whilst the situation remains the same, there's basically enough work to tick over but for a new professional, it'll be hard work. The local college are starting their evening classes soon so I'm going to see whether a more advanced part-time plastering course is on offer. Open day is 24th August.

JSA is coming into the account though and I've got interviews tomorrow (Friday) and Monday too so it's good to see my CV is at least getting me "through the door".

That said, we're in a lucky position of not having to rush in to anything. Best of luck with everyone else.

    Matt

    Thanks Matt and everyone else.

I am beginning to feel a bit lazy looking at what you are all doing and feel inspired to look at possibly further learning. My whole hoise needs plastering so I may look at that first!

    It's great to catch up.

    Hi all!

My DH has been made officially redundant today. We are on holiday from Friday for 2 weeks (great timing!) and then he is on garden leave, albeit that he may be called in to work at short notice until his final day of September 19th. It is an unknown terrotiry for both of us so this thread has been very useful, as well as positive, as redundancy usually conjures up feelings of a negative nature.

Redundancy still hasn't been sorted out and I have started a separate thread (if anyone could have a look and reply I would be very grateful) as didn't want to clog up this thread.

However practical advice in respect of benefits is needed. How soon can we inform Tax Credits and apply for contibution based JSA? DO we have to wait until 19th September when he is officially unemployed? Or is it worth applying now, bearing in mind that these things will probably take weeks to sort out. The sooner we can get our finances and entitlements in order the better. Having never claimed JSA before, or any other benefit apart from Tax Credits, we don't know where to start.

I will keep reading this thread as it has been really positive, so thank you all for that.

Well I've been doing quite a bit of work via a website called PeoplePerHour, it's so nice to be able to work from home as and when I need to... Off to France on Monday and will carry on doing the work while there as I bought myself a netbook with my redundancy money. Once I have set-up my business properly I can put it against business expenses... quite daunting, but still excited about how it's all going to work out. :)
  • Gosh, I've had a busy week this week! Sadly mainly because I found a leak in my downstairs loo and the plumber has been here every day trying to sort it out. We're there now, although I am now going to have to redecorate....ho hum!

I'm off to the Job Centre tomorrow for my interview. Can't say I am looking forward to it but I guess it has to be done.

I've had a call about interest in my CV for a company I had previously done a telephone interview with (and was rejected, so not really sure why they have now decided they want to see me!). Am going to follow through with this and see what happens. I hope it won't scupper my plans for a long holiday though (if only I had got somdthing sorted out, but my OH hasn't even sorted out his son coming for the long weekend yet, and he could be arriving tomorrow night!)

I'm dong the Help For Heroes collection on Friday at my nearest Asda and have got myself a slot at the local RSPCA shop to help out - they seem like a lovely bunch of people. I really wish I didn't have to work at all!!!

All in all, I have far too much I want to do around the house etc to start a new job, but I suppose I could pay someone else to do it if I manage to retain all my redundancy money!

Should get my final pay slip and payment on Friday - interested to see how much it will be for!I might have to frame the payslip as the largest one I have ever had!
What goes around comes around.....I hope!

Good luck lucy - still going well and my only problem I am finding is remembering what my password is in the different workspaces on different days. Although i am finding that people are not great at paying invoices and some are paid 30 days later. Still better than working for a council and having great times xxxx
