Have just received an email from bt saying I went over my 40gb usage last month. I went and checked the usage monitor which shows my previous months average at just over 20gb. I have fibre optic line which is rubbish. I tried to download first I player programme over last couple of weeks and it failed saying bandwidth was too slow/small. Sorry cant remember exact wording. I never download any programmes, don't have Xbox live for kids. I do browse the web for a few hours a day and my kids both have iPod touch which I have to log into for them to download new games so can't imagine it is that.

Just found this thread and hoped somebody can help me. What can I do to see what is using my usage up.?

    Any help would be appreciated.

If you are able to login to your router, there should be Uptime and Bandwidth information - these usually are related. So you should be able to add together the upload and download data, and divide by the uptime to give you your usage per unit time.

e.g. convert the uptime into Days, divide the bandwidth sum by this and you have your usage per day. Times by 30 and you have an estimate of your monthly usage.

    Example:
    Uptime: 12 days 15 hours 30 minutes

    = (12 x 24) + 15 + 0.5 hours = 303.5 hours / 24 = 12.646 days

If your bandwidth was 2GB upload and 15GB download (17GB total) then your daily usage would be 1.344GB per day, or 40.329GB per month.
  • BT are still at it, only been with them for internet about 3 weeks. 2 Feb I received an e:mail (to my old address not my new one, can't even get that right!!) saying I had used about 9.5 Gb of my Feb 10Gb allowance, would I like to change to an unlimited package.

Since we only use the internet for e:mail, web browsing and few document downloads we can't have used nearly 10Gb in two days. Our broadband speed is actually so slow I doubt whether 10Gb could actually download in the time available.

Have tried contacting BT with a complaint by e:mail (to avoid the blood pressure raising call centres) but of course no response!! Hoping Paddy will respond asap,

I was on Option 1 or 2 and the same happened to me. I installed a usage monitor and was using much less according to that than what BT claimed.

At the time it happened, I was reading forums and people would have the same problem (After 10 days, it'd say they're .5GB under the limit or something).

They moved me to Option 3, free of charge, but only because I was without broadband for a week or so and they said I'd gone over. Couldn't have happened.

Did they give you a quote as to what it would cost to upgrade to unlimited?

I was with Orange for ten years on unlimited broadband and TBH I find it very limiting having to worry about what my data usage is.

My problem is that I am on a special deal. I pay £10.45 for plan 1 with BT which is 10 gig a month data plus "free calls anytime". I already paid the line rental a year in advance.

I would want to keep the free calls anytime in any new deal.

I have been with bt since last May and have had similar problems with their data counter, the problem being not necessarily that they are miscounting the data but that they are not updating the day by day online counter correctly, there is always a delay in the system for some of my data to be counted when i am downloading large torrents, it is misleading and means you dont know how much you really have left until the end of the month, there seems to be about a days lag when i start downloading large quantitys of data towards the end of month, this has led to at least 15 pounds of extra charges so far in the last few months, will be leaving BT at end of contract if the money is not refunded. Made a complaint to BT and it was ignored with nobody calling me back as promised!

Was charged an extra £25 for last month's broadband by BT for an extra 25GB (we're on Option 2 - 40 GB). Spent this month cautiously using the internet only to be told that we were nearing our limit. Called BT who said it would take 9 days to upgrade to unlimited as it was over the Easter period and there weren't many people in the office. We turned our hub off for two days until today 1st April. Even with the hub off we used over 5GB data.

There is clearly an issue. Will be writing to BT and not taking the easy option of paying an extra £8 for unlimited. Has anyone else had similar issues - ie hub off but still accumulating data use?
