BT Broadband Usage Meter Wildly Inaccurate

Has anyone experienced the BT Broadband Usage Meter (on their website) grossly over reading?

I'm on BT Option 1 which allows me 10GB each month & I measure my usage at home on both the BT Home Hub & a small programme called Surplus Meter. Both indicate that I am averaging around 125MB/day.

I am confident that there is no unauthorised access to my Wi-Fi - and even if there was, this would show up on the HH data counter - but the BT site shows my month to date usage as 64GB with 1/3 of the month still to come.

Conveniently, the same web page offers me the option to "Upgrade your broadband" - is it just me or does this sound like an unethical sales ploy?

  • Nothing would surprise me, BT Infinity was recently installed in my area and over a couple of months I was bombarded with mail shots about it.
Strangely my Orange BB connection dropped to 0.5Mb regularly during this period. Had to keep rebooting my router to get a decent connection . . .
    Coincidence? hummm

    Hi,

I have been with bt for 2 years on the option 1 plan which gives me 10GB.
In all that time i have never gone over my usage, however since November i have been getting emails informing me that i have gone over my usage and been paying a extra £10 - £20 each month for the extra. Thinking this very strange i have been checking my own usage which is very low as i thought it would be.
However i have found losts of other people experiencing the exact same problem on the bt forum so im thinking bt are overcharging people.

Thats compunding your speed issue, resetting the connection makes it go slower as BT lower your broadband profile/speed

call Orange Broadband and report it, if you get no joy with india broadband customer service with resolution email ceo@bt.com as Orange Broadband is 100% delivered by BT Wholesale

run speedtester.bt.com and post your results & IP profile

Hi Pumpkin - Like you, I've scanned the forums & read how many people are a) Just paying the excess charges or b) Upgrading to Option 2 or 3 and paying the extra cash. I can't believe this is a deliberate money making scam - people would go to prison for that - but I'm not seeing much by way of a response from BT that leads me to believe they recognise that they may have a problem.
  • I have option 1 as well, if you use too much in the first few days you get a " you have used 7GB so far " email, I too have a usage meter which is pretty accurate. For the last few months we have received an email stating that we have used up 22GB and will be charged £15 on your next bill !Apart from blowing up the BT tower, what can we do?

There still seems to be widespread dissent over BT 's apparently wildly inaccurate Internet Usage Metering, over at BT Care in the Community site /Broadband-usage-figures-crazy

I read somewhere that it was something to do with their router downloading information for itself. I wish I could find the article on that. Anyone else see it?

I'm with BT too and got all excited when I read that BT were getting rid of their fair use policy ... only to find out that it was just a PR exercise and that it doesn't affect the people that tend to go over their monthly usage ... and they still plan on banning people that use it too much ...

... so they're not really getting rid of their fair use policy, are they?!
I've been making animations for my daughter. Tell me what you think? Search for "Where are you Pickles?" and "Pickles and the Bully" on YouTube.

  • My parents just took out BT option 1 and within 1.5 months of them having it BT are saying they used 42GB !!! They are furious as the barely use the net. They phoned up and eventually got through to some foreign support who after many calls finally achknowledged there was a fault on BTs end and that she'd corrected it but to deal with the extra payments my folks would have to speak to the Billing people. Upon being put through the billing people (which theyd asked for tech support to speak to the billing peeps and give them a heads up on the situation) they said ''yes you have over gone you allowence but the tech guys havent said why and so theres nothing we can do''. They asked to speak to the manager who denied that any of his colleagues would ever own up to a fault on their end and that he had the phone call they'd made with him and he would listen to it and get back to them that night (13/04/11). He has yet to get back to them.

BT were also over-estimating my bb useage by about 5gb a month so they could charge an extra fiver. This only started in the last 6 month or so. Luckily i'm at the end of my contract so i've moved to sky's unlimited broadband and saved some money
