Was your router left switched on? If so, is your wireless network secure? UsingWPA not WEP?

  • Just been passed from pillar to post 5 times only to be hung up on. Frustrating to say the least.

Only been with BT 6 weeks and want to get off NOW.

Tomhirvin you seem to understand what is going on so please advise. I have received 2 emails about my usage and now either have to upgrade etc. I have not used this amount as I have been away for 2 weeks in US. Can I cancel and leave them and go back to my dongle??
Have you got a number in the UK I can call?

No, you can't cancel after 6 weeks. This issue does not invalidate your contract.

I'm also getting ridiculous readings and additional charges from BT. For years I've been happily plodding along using no more than about 5Gb a month. Recently moved to BT (BIG mistake in hindsight but it was recommended by someone who should have known better), and then upped my account to the 40Gb package. This was mainly because I thought I might be using iPlayer on my Humax box quite a lot.. but in the event I've hardly used it.

So I would estimate my usage as significantly less than 10Gb a month. Yet the BT usage monitor is showing me at 38.53Gb for the month of April.

Well, my wife and I both work in the day. Nobody else knows my wireless key, unless they snuck in past the dog. And there's no sign of blood...

I use a number of devices to access the internet, so installing metering software on my PC is not an option.

This is clearly a problem with BT's statistics gathering - whether it's intentional or not I don't know, but have sent them a letter stating that I don't intend to pay for bandwidth I haven't used.

There are forums all over the place giving testament to the fact that something is wrong. I hope BT address this properly, rather than their usual approach of using their monopoly status to say, "F*ck you."

Really? They have a clause that says they can charge you for stuff you don't use? Wow. I didn't spot that one.

If they are over-charging, they are in breach of contract. If it's an honest mistake, then it's reasonable that they are allowed to rectify. If they continue to breach contract, then the contract is null and void.

Correct, but in this case it is not clear that the billy57 has been overcharged. They have not replied to the query about wireless security posted over 2 weeks ago now.

  • have just spent a rare day off work phoning bt to no avail... like many others here being passed from billing to technical support and being told many different stories that put Roald Dahl to shame... i live alone, i work very long hours often away from home, i very rarely actually use the internet yet i am having bills stating that i have gone over my 40gb limit anything from 30gb over (for a month that i was cut of 3 out of 4 weeks due to late payment) to 123gb over...bearing in mind i live alone, i dont download films or music or stream anything...i do a little research - and i do mean a little - and use facebook now and again to keep in touch with various friends family and that is all

bt are adament i have given my password to some1 - im adament i have not!! to which they ask if any1 could have taken it from my hub - again no! 1 minute they tell me that there may be a problem with bts counter, then when i point out that this has been said by bt later in the conversation, it reverts back to i must have given my password to some1...then it changes to i may have been hacked, in order to get a refund, bt will have to investigate....now a) i was under the impression that when i was passed to 'technical support' when they supplied a new p/w and subsequently ran a check to gauge my usage from new p/w, thats what they were doing...apparently not...apparently i have to wait 7days..not what i was told to start with!! b) am i being paranoid in thinking that once bt have 'investigated' they will tell me i have not been hacked, thereby placing liability back to myself... and THEN...wait for it!! BT tell me that there is no way of finding out if i have been hacked or not, so therefore they cant issue a refund... this would be funny if it wasnt so UNfunny!! :rotfl:they contradict themselves at every turn!!

:mad:i have been told by bt today after umpteen calls that if i am put through to technical support again they will refuse the call...i fail to see why i am put through to them at all as apart from changing my p/w they have been no help at all....and is this not just bt saying in a round about way 'we are accepting no liability for this at all - now plz f***k off!'??

i know the recession is bad, but surely BT do not have to resort to rippin their customers off?? for shame!!!! no wonder british industry is grinding to a halt...people have lost faith and no wonder...no pride whatsoever!! no better than street corner drugdealers...

and THEN....when i ask to be put through to the cancellation department to cancel my subscription i am told that i have to pay a cancellation fee of over £100!! so i have to pay through the nose (again!!) for wanting to cancell a subscription that i am paying through the nose for not using!! some1 somewhere is have a laugh....literally at our expense!!!!! i am lucky if i have had 10 days internet access in the last 2 months...i think it is also telling that BT cut me of toward the end of april and then rconnected me last week,,,is this so they can hike up my internet usage gain and add it to my nxt bill??

i could go on but i won for fear of boring you to death...suffice to say that really is just the tip of my iceberg with bt and i dont know about you guys but i work damn hard for my money and for a company like bt who used to be reputable to be taking my hard earned moneys for services not rendered is an insult and to be fobbed of with every excuse under the sun, in a blatent attempt to rip you of and accept no liabilty, is an insult to my intelligence as it is to yours...i have contacted an indepedent moderator/ombudsman.... the link for which follows... i figure if we all complain right here right now, together, some1 has to sit up and listen to us

ombudsman-services.org/communications. ok apparently as a new user i am not allowed to post links but if you type in the above you should reach the relevant site where you can complain....

Apologies for dredging up an old thread but I think this is still happening.

We switched to BT Option 2, with 40gb allowance on 17th December.

According to BT we used 75gb between 17th and 31st December and have had 44 gb so far in January.

We have an Xbox and PC and occassionally a laptop and iPod touches.

Even with setting up the Xbox I struggle to see that we have used 110 gb in a month
It's taken me years of experience to get this cynical
