I got that figure after researching what was wrong with my last one. Consensus is, the ones ISP's provide is 18 months - 2 years.

The last 3 I've had that have lasted 18 months - 2 years backs this theory.

I guess you've had more luck than me, and alot of other users.

We switched from Virgin to Sky when we moved (same street but since we finally bought we could fit a satellite dish onto the house). Get about 14 meg with Sky, 0.9meg upload... having said all that - we did have fun and games trying to get it all set up to GET those speeds.

There's a programme you can get called inSSIDer 2.0 which will tell you what other wifi networks are running in your vicinity and the channels they're on, then if you go into the router settings you can change to be on a quieter channel to cut out lots of the interferrence (it's a neighbours VM router that causes havoc for us round here) - moving off the default one improved a lot of our speed issues. Having said that, we did find that the Sky routers were pretty pants, so we've piggybacked our old wireless router onto it, and 99% of the time I hookup to that one instead. The SkyUser forums bods helped us a lot getting the initial glitches with our setup sorted out and now we're off and running pretty nicely with it - having had horrifically bad speeds to start with (we'd had endless problems with Virgin and particularly their call centres so wanted to move for Sky's TV package mainly).

Yes their call centres are both equally bad in their own ways - Virgin don't have the hold times but have really bad overseas centres, Sky have horrible hold times and pass you around departments - but for us, Sky's working out better (and cheaper) so far after 4 months. Their £50 Tesco giftcard offer also bought us all our Christmas booze - hic!

I actually quite looked forward to calling the Virgin techie call centre - every single person I spoke to had a lovely Welsh accent :o Simple things eh? Though I have a feeling that's just the technical team rather then general queries!

The Wales guys were good - I just kept getting India...

    "Please uninstall your windows"
    "Please delete your TCP/IPs"

...redialled, got Wales, problem solved in 10 minutes. Just hit the point where you required a stiff drink to brace yourself for ringing them up.

Oh and then they accused me of wanting to commit fraud when I asked to change my name on the account after I got married! That was a corker!
