Have you just signed up with Sky, if so it might still be balancing out.

Do Sky still cap upload at 0.7 or has anyone got a higher speed? I get quicker using my mobile phone for upload.

Didnt know they did cap it! Not just signed up with sky, had it well over a year now, but its got really really bad over the past few months, the connection drops about 5/6 times a day and the speed in so inconsistant. Drives me mad!

gemma, are you a new customer with sky? and have you got all your phone lines set up correctly? (all filtered the right way round)?

the problem aswell with browser-based speed tests is that they don't account for other activity on the line, i.e. other users or programmes using the connection at the time of the speed test.

Have had sky for well over a year and for each speed test there has only been me online and all over computers have been switched off. In fairness my iphone was connected to it too but it wasn't doing anything but sitting there and checking for emails every hour :s

Connect your computer to the router via a cable a test again. Interference on the wifi channel can significantly slow down your connection. I get 11mbs on wifi and 14.5mbs on a cable connection.

You can change the channel of your router via its admin screen. Get a wifi analyzer app for your PC or iPhone and look for a channel without much action on it.

I have a box of microfilters collected over time. Some give better download rates than others. You may want to unplug everything from telephone lines and test each microfilter seperately to see if one is better than the other. You could even borrow another one and try that.

Check if your in an unbundled exchange. If your using BT wholesale (through sky) they can and do traffic manage at peak times down to 0.5meg down and 0.25 meg up which is what you were getting. My bro in law has the same problem and it took sky months to admit thats what was going on.
  • We have had the same problem as we had been told 4megs then they dropped it to 2megs and we are lucky if we get 1meg!! they say its because if there is any interference on the line the speed drops until the interference clears but you have to keep ringing them up to get them to increase the speed which we have done at least 4 or 5 times and we are at the point we are just going to go to another provider.

On previous threads on MSE Ive been given an email address for Jeremy Darroch who deals with high level complaints so its worth a shot.

I hope this helps but I will warn you dont threaten to leave as they are really not bothered!

What planet are you on? What you said was completely wrong.
Unbundled simply gives the ability for other providers to provide services from that exchange.

Traffic management is only for those who have consistently "overused" with regards to the fair use policies that the ISPs implement. They dont just cap the average Joe.

The email for Jeremy should only be used once you have completed Sky's internal complaint process.

I have emailed Jeremy several times before regarding an issue when I first joined Sky. The first email I sent was replied to with an apology, but they couldnt investigate because I hadnt made a formal written complaint to Sky.

Write to them, give them 14 days, then re-evaluate. If its still not good, then drop Jeremy an email. You should get a telephone/email response within 48 hours.

I had almost exactly the same problem with Virgin - supposed to be 20meg, line could take up to 13, only getting 0.5... after months of them sending out new routers, new filters, waiting, rechecking speeds, etc. an engineer finally came out with his gubbins to look at the wiring. Turns out everything in the house was fine, but the BT bloke who had connected the phoneline to the pole outside had messed up and the problem was actually with our external connection. Perhaps worth suggesting an engineer callout?

If you've had it well over a year now it could be that your router is on it's last legs, average lifespan is 18 months.

Where do you get that figure from? A router will last for ages.
