Rent payment for university students living at home

I'm starting university in September. My mum is retired and gets her rent paid for her.

When I start university, I'm planning on staying at home. I want to get a job eventually, but initially, am i expected to pay the rent that my mum currently gets paid for her, out of my maintenence grants/loans?

Any arrangement between you and you mum is a personal family arrangement.

But if you don't pay towards your keep from your grants/loans, how would you expect it to be paid?

I understand I have to pay for my keep (ie my food or give my mum some money each week).

I'm asking if i'm expecting to pay the full £80+ rent a week out of my grants. So the responsibility is entirely mine for rent payment.

Are you saying that once you start uni your mother will no longer have her rent paid for her? (I presume by housing benefit or something?)

In any case its just a matter for you to sort out between you if your mother wants to charge you rent.

I'm unsure if my mother is going to continue having them paid for her, that's what i'm asking really.

Who is asking you to pay this rent? Your mother or the landlord or what?

Your mum needs to look at www.turn2us.org.uk to find out how this will affect her.

Someone here suggested that the assumed non-dependent adult contribution is £51.50 per week. If so, then you would be expected to pay that much rent, plus your contribution of utilities and food. Your mum can still claim the Single Person's Council Tax Allowance; you have to get the letter from the University when you register.

you might be able to get some advice from the Students' Union or the University Student Finance office.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Full time students in Higher Education without dependents or disabilities cannot claim housing benefit, neither can anyone who has no liability to claim HB (such as not being the named tenant).

No ones asking me to pay anything yet. It would be the council though.

Where does this figure of £80 come from? Is this the figure your mother wishes to charge you for living at home, lodging costs?

Is this cheaper or dearer than living in student halls or student digs?

Are you on the tenancy agreement as the joint tenant?

If you aren't a tenant, there's no liability for you to pay the social housing landlord (the council) any rent.

If your mother is the sole named tenant with her council property then any arrangement you make to contribute to household expenses is a personal family matter, paid for out of your own income if you do not qualify for any benefits.
