Hi my daughter (18 yrs,1yr ncb after 10 mths policy) was looking on comparison sites to get an idea how much her renwal would be and she got a quote for £867.Paid £1330 for 10 mths policy with diamond last year.
She rang Diamond to see what their new quote was going to be and was told £999.00 the quote she had found was also with diamond,so she questioned it, and was put through to a different dept, who actually price matched the lower quote. She then tried another quote upping her mileage and lowered her compulsary excess by £150 and it came out slightly cheaper so they honoured that quote.
so now she has paid £822.00 for 12mths policy,5000 miles and £350 comp excess.A much better deal and saved over £500 from last yr.
She drives y reg 1L 12V corsa and has 2 addtional drivers her Dad and Aunt. DONT JUST RENEW do some searching and give the insurer a call.0 -
In the pas several week i have been trying to get reasonable insurance for my 17yr old daughter who has just passed her test. We had managed to get a good condition Ford Ka 1.3 Y plate from a friend of a friend with a full service history & at a good price.
I have been on many forums looking for help, as initial attempts got best quote of £2400, with the car in Mrs name & daughter as named driver, this didn't go down well with our daughter as she wanted to use for college etc, so wasn't Dependant on local bus.
Finally i found ingenie.com, which is a black box system, quote for daughter to be owner of car & main driver, with both me & Mrs as named drivers, mileage set at 8000, seemed reasonable.
Total cost £2029, there are tow levels of excess £750 for daughter & £350 for both Mrs & I
We have needed to talk to them, on both occasions very friendly staff
I would recommend ingenie without hesitation
Finally thanks to all the contributers on this & other forums for helping me get to a happy daughter who is now building up her own no claims now0 -
Hi All
I am very new to this kind of forum so I hope this is the correct place to post this. I have quite a complicated (I think!) scenario for which I would appreciate some advice. Here goes ...
Son (17) passed test in October 2012
Bought a 51 plate (02) Renault Clio 1.2 16v Expression privately on 15th of this month and insured it Third Party, Fire and Theft in his own name with me and mum as named drivers for £1660 with Admiral.
I declared non-standard alloy wheels on the policy but have since found out( Thursday) the suspension has been lowered slightly and the exhaust is non-standard. Asked my son not to use the car until I had contacted Admiral re mods. I phoned Admiral and advised them of these mods and paid an additional £137 to get them on the policy with a view to having the mods removed within the next week. Admiral said they would then reimburse the additional premium pro-rata when removed.
So far so good ....!
Now for the complicated part.
After getting the car on the Tuesday, he and his pal (also 17) were driving their cars on the Wednesday and they had a bump at a roundabout!!
My son's car suffered most damage - air bag on seat activated as well as a nasty V shaped dent in the drivers door and sill bent. His pal's car has slight damage to wing and bonnet.
Both boys are telling slightly different versions of the incident, both claiming the other hit them.
My son is quite happy to fix the damage himself and has sourced a new door and seats from local breakers for £60.
However the other boy's father wants to put the claim through a fully comp policy which is in the other boy's grandfathers name with my son's pal as a named driver. Having checked on the Internet is this not called "fronting" as the registered keeper/owner (grandfather) is not the main driver?? This is why I insisted my son have the car and policy in his own name.
My concern is that my son was driving his car with the mods undeclared on the insurance documents. Would this lead to cancellation of his policy should the insurance companies become involved?
The best outcome for this situation, I think, is for the other party to repair their car without involving the insurance companies as both boys will be penalised at their renewal date if I am not mistaken.
Any advice, comments on this would be appreciated and sorry for the long post.0 -
It's not fronting for the boy to be a named driver on another's policy. It is if he is the main driver but is not nominated as the main driver.
The undeclared mods could result in the policy being voided. If your son is found liable (or partly liable) and the policy is voided, then his insurer will still deal with any liabilities to the third party, but may come to him to reimburse them.
He does need to sort out the mods, as he may be involved in another more expensive claim and find his policy voided with worse consequences! (A voided policy on your record is bad news)0 -

Certainly best for your son not to involve insurance. If he manages a year with no accidents, he will have 1 year NCB at renewal which is usually about a 30% saving. Although if had an accident 1 day after getting the car, what are the chances of managing another 364 days without further incident.0 -
Hi
Mods to alloys were declared when inurance taken out so that was on the policy. I added the other mods (suspension and exhaust) once I found out about them which was, unfortunately, after the accident.
They have now been added to his policy.0 -
my 18 yr old daughter has been getting online quotes and including me (Mum) as named driver living at same address but also her Nan, who doesn't live here.
Quotes are reduced considerably with Nan but is this ok to do?
Any comments gratefully received
thanks!0 -
If nans just a named driver thats OK.
Things to watch with named drivers. Do they have points or accidents. You need to keep the insurer updated.
With older people on there especially if they dont currently drive then watch their licence expiry dates and any health issues that may affect their licence.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Hi there ... looking for some guidance ...
My daughter is 17.5 and going to start driving lessons soon. We only have one car and it's not suitable for a learner, so going to buy a small second-hand car (1.2L or less I presume). Want to make sure the insurance will be kept down whilst she's learning and after ie. a car in one of the lowest insurance groups.
A few weeks ago she was looking at Ex&M and I did a couple of test insurance quotes and was surprised at the big difference in quotes between cars of similar size engine.
Does anyone know if is there anywhere I check out insurance groups so I know what cars to look out for and what to avoid?
Thanks ... Simon.0 -
When sourcing car insurance for my 17 year old son a year ago, the cheapest and most appropriate appeared to be through the AA with a small black box device. We paid the premium and have access to an Internet portal which records daily driving scores and provides an overall score. We have found this extremely helpful and were very pleased initially.
However, the system works on a GPS satellite system, unfortunately, we live in rural Lincolnshire and discovered quite by chance, that many of the roads he uses are set at a default 40 miles an hour on the system, although the actual speed limit is 60. Consequently, his scores have not been accurate. The AA have re calibrated some of the roads but it has become a real nuisance to have to keep contacting them to check any new roads he travels on!
Whilst these boxes can help keep the costs down, they are no use if they do not record accurately, be warned, it is a real faff to have to keep updating the company.0
