I've found that with car boot sales the most profitable thing to do is stick to a few categories which you're somewhat familiar with. Even though I'm not an expert I've done fantastically with rare kid's books- I bought one for 10p at a jumble sale and sold for £255! Another was bought for 75p and went for £95. Mostly I buy them for 15p-£2 and re-sell them for £5-£25, still a great profit margin.

Of course, there's always a few which buck expectations. I was convinced one I bought was worth a fortune and ended up selling for £1.35 :undecided

A few years ago I remember selling a couple of books that I had since I was a child. All in good condition for their age and had not really been read. I was just clearing them out at about 60p a book on Ebay, but one book suddenly sold for just over £12. I cannot remember the name of the author, but it did not jump out as a name well known. The actual buyer turned out to be a partner of the owner to the Ebay ID as at first she sent me an email saying that her account had been hacked. About 30 minutes later, she sent another email saying "I apologise, sorry my partner for some reason wants this book....". That was and probably will be my greatest Ebay auction. I think the book was £1.50 when my parents bought it for me as a child.

In fact, the book may have belonged to my brother initially :p

  • I found a car boot stall that was selling outgrown kids clothes, bought loads for my own DD which I sold on for a profit later, but also bought all the Next items in 2 other sizes. Bought for £3 - sold as a bundle for £49.

I do well with equine stuff also. Bought a myler bit for £3 and sold for £35, and other bits and bobs as this is a category I know well. The best deals are when you buy something you actually need, use it, then sell it for a profit.

Had two good sells with badly pictured items too. Bought a Tiffany necklace for £30 and sold for £62. Also I really wanted a very popular Topshop coat last year s bought my size and got a good deal but also bought a really bad picture one in a diiferent size for £12 and sold for £60.

One summer a couple of years ago I bought loads of horsey stuff from a CB and sold it on ebay, then bought a load of local pick it up horsey stuff on ebay (lots of saddles) and took them to a horse and tack sale/action and sold them for a big profit. All about knowing your markets!!
I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be

My favourite was a very small set of vintage perfume, sealed and one no longer manufactured, bought for 20p. Sold for £50 with two continental buyers vying with each other. Very easy to dispatch as it was so small.

Bought a skirt for 50p thinking it would fit me, but too big and sold for £12. Interesting, as exactly the same one on ebay had sold for around £3. I didn't think my description or photo was any better.

I have bought clothes at car boots and been disappointed if they don't fit or have holes I hadn't spotted. I don't make too many mistakes though and tend to buy very low.

I did really well a few years ago:

    Bootsales:
Certain type of Care Bear Paid 50p, Made £500
Ericaphon Telephone Paid £2, Made £120 (WISH I'd have kept that now!)
Suitcase full of My Little Pony Paid £3, Made £750 ish
Various My Little Pony paying from 50p to £3 and making up to £120 per pony

    Charity Shops
Hideous Head Vase, I loved it as kitsch OH HATED it. Paid £1 Made £95
Boxed 1970's figure of Zorro, Paid £11 (a lot for me!) Made £800
Various My Little Pony again making up to £120 Per Pony

I'm a bit of an 80's toy expert though so can spot the 'right' thing. Pity prices have fallen so drastically now :(

My fav was a job lot of subbuteo local pick up only, turned out some of the bits were being stored in a rare old subbuteo box one of the first ever versions. The seller hadn't even pictured it so i picked up the whole lot for around £10 got to keep the teams we were after and sold the box although battered for £50. Then the remainder of the lot for another £40+ to think i was going to throw the box in in the bin!!!

Only once made a profit as I'm usually rubbish at spotting what will sell so only buy something if I want it myself - however once picked up a length of laura ashley curtain fabric for 50p that I never got round to using, sold on ebay for £29, not as great as some on here but I was well chuffed:j
