    I get fed up with shop assistants who address me as "mate". What happened to "May I help you sir". Also get exasperated with shop assistants who say "You alright there?" to which my answer is, "I'm fine, thank you"
  • 'I for one'... drives me crackers, why not just say 'I'?

    also, when people feel the need to say 'no word of a lie' - or 'its the gospel truth' it always makes me think they are a big, fat fibber... likewise '... and I'm not making this up...' (especially in the context of an asylum seekers cat!)
  • Americanisms

    "Can I get...." instead of "can I have...."
    Store instead of shop
    "I'll call you" instead of "I'll ring you"

    Other words and phrases

    You have two choices - no, you have two options and A choice

    You have only one choice - Well it's not a choice then is it? You mean you only have one option

    "I'm not being funny, but....." If you've got something to say, then just say it.

    "I swear down"

    People using the term "devastated" for trivial things. I hardly think you are "thoroughly destroyed" because Mcdonalds has ran out of milkshakes.

    Standing behind someone at the bus stop who was speaking to her friend, I heard "So I turned round and said.....then she turned round and said....so then I turned round and said..." Seemed to be so much turning round I'm surprised they weren't too dizzy to say anything!

    I detest that expression too!
  • ''At the end of the day''

    is my most hated 'saying'! i wonder if its been said, will trek through 23 pages!

    I detest it too!

    I've not read everything so these may have already been mentioned:

    at this moment in time (now?);
    force of habit (surely habit is enough?);
    confused.com.

    I don't like confused.com or simples!
  • How many of you cliche haters actually write on the board often. If you did then maybe the standard of English would be improved.
    It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.

    I have only just joined the forum. And discovered this thread.

    I dislike the fact that spelling, punctuation and grammar does not seem important anymore. Do people not realise that i is supposed to be captilised, and their name?
