    Agree with all above, but most important - get your own bank account. Even if you've had credit issues in the past, there are some banks that specialise in bank accounts with no credit facilities, overdraft etc. I think the co-op is often recommended on MSE for this - get one now. Get the child benefit and your salary paid into that as soon as you can.

    If she left before sorting this out, you could be in a tight spot with money.

    Read the section about Basic Bank Accounts - there's a link to a website which lists and compares the ones available.
    Getting this could also help you repair your credit rating.
