Corrupt HR Departments?

Let the conversations begin....
I will start off by saying that I was disciplined for something that almost got me fired and learned that another employee did the exact same thing and did not even get a verbal.
I had a bad year (or that is the way it has been painted out to be) - sicknesses, absences (all approved and Fit note provided for). I also had an investigation take place that resulted in no action (I was proven innocent) yet the notes of the investigation were placed on my file and the same notes were discussed and played a contributing factor to a reverse a promotion - why?
Yet, my colleague was caught and sniffing drugs at a work function and was given a verbal? - Ermmmmmmmmmm - !!!!!!? This is a violation of the procedure and considered Gross Misconduct. The procedure outlines all rules must be followed at work and business functions.
I think I could use Race Discrimination but not going to go there because I don't believe i need to stoop to a false level.
Any of you have corrupt HR people? Very quick to play Chief Inspectors when an employee f***s up but the same rules are avoided when they fail to follow protocol themselves. Rather, they find ways to sweep things under the rug.

it depends what you think the role of HR is.
if you believe it is to ensure all employees are treated equitably, you are wrong - argueabley, that's the union role.
It's to keep the company running smoothly staff wise... hopefully by legal means.. and sometimes manager choose to ignore legal advice and the poor HR bod can only do as much as they can to influence.Debt free 4th April 2007.
New house. Bigger mortgage. MFWB after I have my buffer cash in place.0 -
Is it worth writing a letter to the CEO of the company?
Why have I been treated differently to those who do the same? Who do you complain to?0 -
This happened to me a a few years back now, but nothing as serious as taking drugs, i went outside for a quick sneaky fag, others were doing the same thing and i was warned by my then manager. Yet another colleague did exactly the same and nothing said. I approached our HR manager and she said in no uncertain terms if i dont like it theres the door.
But i do also think that it's a situation of if your face fits then you go far. For me though HR are looking out for the interests of their employers rather than the employee.
I was quite friendly with the owner of the company i worked for and he said none of his business he employs people to solve those problems for him.0 -

Because they want to get rid of you probably considering the bad year you have had and the cost to the company you have created in terms of sickness etc and you will be well in their radar because of this and the other person may be treated favourably but also they may not have had lots of absenses or been in for other investigations etcThe Googlewhacker referance is to Dave Gorman and not to my opinion of the search engine!
If I give you advice it is only a view and always always take professional advice before acting!!!
4 people on the ignore list....Bliss!0 -
H R / Personnel call it what you will - they work for the person who pays their wages and act on their instructions, morals or what is *right* doesn't come into it.
I think all of us learn this to our cost sooner or later, after which we never think otherwise. I have once known an H R person leave in disgust at what she was being told to do, but that is rare.
Work colleagues are not friends until you no longer work with them, and I'm afraid life is not always fair.0 -
I worked for a tourist company over the summers while I was at uni. In the second year I was promoted to supervisor. I applied to go back for a third year but was rejected. I was in shock for weeks, I phoned the manager an even he was shocked. I found out several months later that the assistant manager didn't like me, and that she was related to the chef that I kept giving burnt food back too.
The laughable bit is, I ended up on a internship instead on twice the money I earnt there. I was talking to the other assistant manager and he's told me the head of the clique that had it in for me, is still working the same NMW job as she was as a student two years after graduation. Here's me graduating in June, stepping straight into a good job and applying for graduate positions with Historic Scotland and HarperCollins.
The even funnier thing is because of the internship I'm buddies with the HR manager.0 -

I don't believe it's down to 'HR'.
Just as it's not down to 'Finance' or 'Marketing'. As ever in life, it's almost always about the individuals in those departments and how they choose to behave. I know plenty of HR people who work on the instruction of their Director / MD / Business Manager. I know many who genuinely believe in providing outstanding customer service because they understand that's their role.
I am an HR professional who used to work for a large company and left because of the way my senior HR manager treated others. I stood up to her, I refused to do some of the work I was asked to because I didn't feel it was morally right, and I won some of those fights. But I couldn't tolerate her attitude and left.
It also depends on what HR does in each organisation. Often it provides ER advice to managers - who are then free to take what action they wish. HR often makes the policies and procedures and partners with the business. But at the end of the day, it's line managers who should make the decisions. HR have (probably) created a procedure through which disciplinaries are managed. But whether or not there is a corrupt individual in there who deliberately made that decision against you, or whether your manager made the decision (as should really be the case) I don't know.
Equally, there may be good reasons why they chose to sack you and not someone else. But rarely is a whole department just 'corrupt'. It's the people who make up a department, and as in EVERY department there are some great people and some really useless ones.
KiKi' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0
