It is great though and does the job it's intended for.
Fortunately, mine's still going strong.
I was saddened last winter to see the hardware store where I bought mine now sells what I suspect is a cheap Chinese knock-off instead.
No class, some people!0 -

Some people do quite well with anthracite, which is mined, not manufactured, but I find it next to impossible to light and of very variable quality.
Hope that's some help.
I use the anthracite now to keep the fire in - rather like slack on the open fire
I couldnt light a fire fresh from it but once I have a hot fire,, I put a layer of anthracite on, close it down near completely and thats it for a good few hours
Ive still a ton of smokeless left from last year so dont know what the prices are this year - around £16 a bag no doubt0 -
I just ordered 8x20kg bags of 'premium housecoal', delivered for £52 (inc vat).
Works out at £6.50 per 20kg bag (min order £50). Seems cheap enough to me. Could have bought it in 50kg lots a very slightly bit cheaper (from the same place), but I don't think that would be bagged up.
Local garage has 10kg bag for £5.50 for 'housecoal'. I bought one last year and it was mainly tiny pieces, but it burnt ok.
edit, we're in Surrey.0 -

It was the first supplier google throw out, which is a national supplier which seems to vary it's prices depending on your postcode. It's FUELS4U.COM (no connection, apart from placing an order today). We are a couple of miles South of Oxted, if that makes a difference.0 -
That's a good price for coal. My local coal merchant charges £9.60 for 25kg of 'C grade' coal, delivered. And that's the pre-winter increase price!0

A word of caution - I've just checked Fuels4you.com's prices on smokeless products and they are a lot higher than those from a local coal merchant, here in Kent. As always, it's worth making the comparison.0

Got a brochure off a coal merchant cash and carry 5 minutes walk away:
Calco: £6.50 25kg
Burnglo: £6.00
Esse A: £8.00
Hi Lite: £8.00
Turf/blocks per bag: £3.50
Plus around 8% off if you buy 5 of each.0 -
