OS Daily thread for Tuesday 15th March 2011

Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Tuesday 15th March. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the
Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

    Good morning all,
It is grey, coldish and very misty here this morning.

Was going to wash bedding and hang it out -- but that might have to wait for better weather.

I'm going to buy some butternut squash seeds today and try my luck. We've been successful with cucumbers, courgettes, melons and pumpkins, so hopefully butternut squash will be similar.

Dinner tonight will be Chinese Chicken a la ChocClare who posted it and its had rave reviews. Lunch will be lentil soup. My soup making workshop yesterday entailed using loads of pots and utensils. DW almost up to speed with it all. Will finally catch up today. BM also needs going on.

Thoughts and prayers for the people of Japan and their families and friends. It is a hearbreaking disaster.

Hugs for those who want or need,
    Happy Tuesday, Silver x

Morning silvermaid and all who follow x

Today after work I have to go to Lidl and get a few essentials to last a month... Dinner tonight for me is Herrings, onion and tomatoes on Toast, as the boys are having Tuna Surprise on Jacket Potatoes and I'm not allowed it :(

DH is going to pick up my prescription tonight... my Psoriasis is driving me nuts as I forgot to do this last week!

Just finished my book from the library and now I have to wait until Friday to get the two sitting there waiting for me :(

Work today, and at some point I need to tweak and finalise my shopping list for the 'BIG' monthly shopping trip on Thursday!
We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like. I don't and I'm happy!

Morning Silver and all who follow. Had a fab meeting at the school last night - PTA! We're all set for our jumble sale on 25 March and I'm now tasked with organising a cocktails night. Today will be full with sorting out OH to be on the medical agency books. He needs to give various documents to them, and as they're close I told him he could take me out for lunch / coffee. He owes me big time for kicking him into action. When the boys wake up the washing machine will be on, after breakfast the DW will be on too. Tomato seeds growing, strawberry seeds not doing too well so have covered them with cling film to see if it works.

Am looking into hypnosis to help with my food addiction (not joking, can't stop) and my stress levels due to autistic son and his behaviour. Was offered a holiday in Tenerife last night for £49 for the 4 of us!!! Had to pay for our flights on top, and also would have to sit through a presentation where they try and sell us one of their holiday appartments! Was very keen, but then looked into it a bit more and realised that the cost of their appartments is so high that I would feel guilty taking the holiday knowing that I wouldn't be in the slightest bit interested. Although really want to have some SUN!!!!

Dinner tonight will be veggie stirfry I think - need to sort out whats in the fridge and use it before it goes over. Looks grey outside, but no rain yet. Aahhhh kettle boiled, so I'm off for my coffee, have a good day everyone.
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Morning silvermaid, JulieGeorgiana & everyone else

Cold & misty/foggy here this morning, so I probably won't be pegging out today, either. :(

DS3 (who's nearly 4) was sick again last night, thankfully making it to the bathroom, so no extra washing! He's not ill, but has occasional episodes of chucking up at night in bed - can't explain it, but sometimes seems to be when he's really tired. Trouble is, if it's late at night, his sleep is disturbed, so he's even more tired next day, poor kid. May keep him off nursery if he's not right this morning.

Started pricing up beds for older DS yesterday - he wants a double but the little room he's moving into is TINY & the widest we can have is 47" by 74" long. A firm in a nearby town who makes beds has quoted me £325 incl mattress, £25 each extra for drawers, which I think is really good for a 'made-to-measure' bed! We also need carpet in there, should come in around £150 incl fitting, and we said we'd get him a new t.v. but all accessories he has to get himself - well, he is 19 with a good part time job! Really looking forward to the change around now - just in time for Easter - fresh starts and all that. :)

Tea is curry using oddments of chicken & naan bread from freezer, got to get sauce from local shop - works out cheaper than trailing into town; even though it'll be more than town there's no petrol or temptations!

Off for breakfast - hope you have good mornings & hugs/kisses in advance if you need them!

    A xo

    Morning all
Another one here having ChocClare's chicken for tea.
Esmf, be very wary, there are a lot of horror stories about these companies.
DW loaded, hubby dropped at the station with his pack up, fish fed, breakfast eaten, another chore has been added to my morning list, I now uncover the raised beds in the morning if it isn't frosty.
I'm off to the hospital at 10, another couple of hours of people poking around in my eyes.
We have a great deal of bad feeling at work, there are 17 of us in the admin team, when someone got married last weekend she invited the 6 of us that she works with but not the other 11 who she barely knows, one of those 11 is now kicking up a stink, claiming she was 'entitled' to an invite. Bloody hell, she's nearly 60 & behaving like a disappointed toddler, thank heavens I'm only in work for a couple of hours. I getting into trouble because I 'let the cat out of the bag', I'm sorry but I'm not going to pander to this stupidity, I think she needs to grow up.
    Have a lovely day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

    Morning All :D

My middle son was up in the night last night, throwing up, so I am hanging this morning. He is quite happy this morning and shows no ill effects but I will have to keep him home for 2 days, which means I am going to miss out on my last day of my course and my sewing machine refresher. The refresher can be re=scheduled as it is only with a friend but I am really peeved to be missing the last day of my course.

The even worse thing is I put new pillows, duvet and freshly laundered covers etc. So I am really p'd off.
So my washing machine will be working overtime today with mountains of bedding.

Oh! and my flipping DH didn't put the left over stew in a container last night and left it in the SC.

    Good morning!

Still in bed with lappie and a cup of tea but will need to get up and have a shower in a minute as I need to go to work.

Well we should have been flying out to Tokyo today to visit DD and SIL....................they are OK and have gone to his parents in Gifu who are seven hours away by car.

I tried to get her to come home but she is sticking to her new husband and I admire her for it. That doesn't stop me being frantic with worry though.

Oh well I am adopting the motto "Keep calm and carry on" so we have cancelled our leave and DH went to work at silly o clock.

We have arranged refunds on our air tickets, car parking etc and changed our yen back to sterling. The presents are still on the kitchen worktop.....

Mince for tea in some form.

    Have a good day everyone.

    Good Morning All
:j:beer:Many Happy Returns Tru - have a fantastic day :j

Gintot - I can understand you being worried, glad they are in a safe area.

Very misty here this morning, hopefully it means will be a lovely day later. OH is going to spend sometime in the garden this week so hopefully will be able to start hanging washing out soon.

Not having ChocClares chicken tonight but have saved the recipe and am looking forward to having it soon :)

Am popping into town this morning. Just fancy a couple of hours wandering around. Need some more bath stuff from Lush and a couple of bits from Lakeland. I think a Starbucks may sneak in there as well :rotfl:

Dinner is unknown at the moment - will know more when I have a route around in the freezer.

Didn't post yesterday as had to leave very early for an hospital appointment - had a scan & everything appeared ok. Don't think I am going to get an answer as to way I had such a massive infection last year. On the plus side though lots of my bits have been scanned & everything is in working order :D

Hope you all have a good day.x

    Redruby -
    from ChocClare
This is a nice one (and dead easy):

    Chinese Chicken

    In a casserole dish, place
    6 tblsps wine
    3 tblsps soy sauce
    1 tblsp water
    1 tblsp sugar
    1 tsp made mustard

Mix round to stir. Put your chicken thighs in the dish and zhuzh round so they get covered in the sauce. Bung in the oven on about gas 5 for...um.... not sure - an hour? I judge it by when it starts to smell nice ;). Remove the lid from the casserole and return to the oven for a further 20-30 mins until skin is crispy and brown. This is a dish which benefits from cooking until the meat falls off the bone, as nothing is more bleurch than a scarcely-cooked chicken thigh!

This is delicious and makes a LOT of gravy - more than you'd think for the amount of liquid you start with. It also freezes and reheats beautifully - in fact, it tastes better the next day (this also allows you to let it go cold and take off any extra fat). Serve with mash to soak up the gravy, or rice.

ChocClaire says she uses 8 thighs for 4 servings

Got some blotchy bananas to use up so will make banana crunch (bit like flapjacks) then the boys can munch them when they come in from school starving. Hope they'll still have space for the Chinese chicken - I'm sure they will 'coz they appear to be hollow:) I'm cooking 16 thighs (two packs of 8 was cheaper than one of 8 and one of 4!) I shall also include 1 breast for SIL which I will add half way through the cooking time. ChocClare said that it freezes and re-heats well. Might not get the chance if DGSs decide they like it:)

Hester - "there's nout so quare as folk";) Deep breaths ... think calm.
Gintot - thank God they're safe and getting a good distance away.
    Happy Birthday tru

Need to get on. Work planning today ho hum. Still the pennies are welcome at the end of the month:)
Hugs for those that want or need, Silver x
