Just a related question (perhaps) whats the position with money made from online betting and the dwp?,where the winnings are paid direct into your bank account(i`m not talking massive amounts here but a profit of maybe £200 over 3 months),but total capital well under the £6000 limit
    anyone know?

There have been a few court cases about this. From memory, the general consensus is that it is fine as long as it is not so habitual that it could be seen to be a career, or providing a regular income.

I don't know if anybody has had a decision about matched betting income yet, as that is seen to be a venture of skill rather than luck.

I'm off out now but if you want me to find the details I'll have a look tomorrow.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Just to say i, honest to god, did not even expect anyone to read what i had written, let alone carry on!

On IB, you are entitled to earn a small amount, but it still has to be declared I was told this very clearly. Its very obvious why there is permitted work allowed on IB as it is a good way to make a first step back into employment or at least do some kind of employment if you are not well enough to work normal hours.

As to the guy jumping out the builder van and signing on, here we go again with assumptions, you see 1 guy do it and assume the problem is widespread. Of course he may have been on trial in the job or something so technically still unemployed.

    I agree.

There are so many people out there up to all sorts. Claiming whilst working and so forth. When my sister signed on last week one bloke jumped out of a building van run into the j.centre , signed on and jumped back in. He's working colleague sat in the drivers seat waiting for him. This was in full view of the j.centre. No where's the sense in that..

it is personal items and not bulk just like what the other comments have been. Don't worry about it

your allowed to work and sign at the same time. They ask if you have done any work? Dosent mean you are committing fraud every case is different. Its stories like this which are misguided that cause problems. You cant assume he was doing something wrong just cos he was seen getting out of a van:rolleyes:

Absolutely. The benefit rules are so complicated and confusing and people are so quick to judge out of sheer ignorance of them.

I once worked in a small local convenience store whilst signing on. I couldn't find full time work and so I took what I could get :( I had to declare to the benefit office how many hours I worked and how much I had earned every fortnight when I signed on. I made hardly any money because the majority of what I earned was just taken out of the benefits I received.

It's best people check their facts first before they jump in and get someone potentially accused of fruad. They may just be someone trying to do the best they can in less than fortunate circumstances.

you could argue ebaying is more of a hobby than anything else.

I think the only person I ever deemed to be receiving an income from Ebay was a lady that refused to provide any details of her trading, she had 3 websites and an Ebay shop and the sold items were clearly not personal items being cleared out. When people refuse to provide you with details then more often then not they will be treated as having more income/capital then their benefit allows them to have.

You are in shaky ground when you start buying stuff to sell it on as that clearly is a form of trading! Mind you, I am now on Income Support myself as a Lone Parent following redundancy in 2007 and even though I know the rules and have administered the benefits, I still shy away doing things like Ebaying etc, mainly as I just dont want to go through the hassle of having to provide the evidence etc etc :o:rotfl:
