its only expensive if you cant afford it.
i got mine sim free from apple and i love it. and it will keep a lot of its original value as its unmarked as i use front and back screen protectors etc.
its all down to personal choice, if someone wants one and they can afford one, then its up to them if they buy one - no one else !!!

personally i work hard dont smoke, hardly drink so why not. it makes me laugh when people think they have the right to tell others what they should or shouldnt buy.

    Why pick on the iPhone?

There are plenty of "brand" name products out there that people buy simply for the name (eg, Reebok trainers), and then there are people like myself that will buy something simply because we want a new toy to play with.
For example, I paid just shy of £350 for the world's fastest consumer level SSD a few weeks ago as a replacement hard drive, simply because I was bored sat at home because my GP won't let me work.

    Did I actually need it?
No I didn't need it, but I was in a position to justify spunking £350 on nothing more than a toy that kept me occupied for a few hours so does that put me in the same class as someone who chooses a particular brand?

If you want something and can afford it, then regardless of brand name why should you not have it?
Secondly, why categorize someone just because they choose a particular manufacturer or product?
Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.

If you want it, can afford it, get it - no problem
If you want it, cannot afford it but still get - problem

Why do think there is lots of people in debt in this country?
People not paying off credit cards, bills etc...

What cracks me up is when i see people on the forum asking about
whats the best iphone deal etc... the thing i find amusing is that
they are on are forum called MoneySavingExpert theres a clue there!

If you got the finances to easily afford a iphone maybe igotcashtoburn.com would be a better forum.

Sounding more and more like an anti-iPhone rant to be honest.

Can you explain why someone shouldn't want the best deal even if they are very well off? Why does it 'crack you up' and 'amuse' you?

Whilst your probably right what can anyone do? It's a personal choice. Me I prefer to save for something than buy it on credit, but I'm in a minority.

As I said earlier people are used to cheap credit, it's not around as much now. However people still think it is.

Theres only so much nannying a state should so, people need to learn for themselves.

But thats the problem right there a cheaper smartphone like OSF for example can do all that?

And that problem has been created by peoples lack of knowledge
    especially with IT related products.
Why is it a problem? I know my phone is technically overkill for what I use it for, but I'm happy with it.

I actually bought an OSF just before xmas, but returned it a few days later as I got a good deal on the HTC Desire which I love, the OSF is a great phone, but I'm quite happy to pay two and a half times the amount for a better spec'd phone even though I know it's not the latest greatest phone.

My previous android phone does most of what my HTC desire does, but I wanted an upgrade. The apps I use on a regular basis pretty much consist of the syncing related things, gmail, google reader, calendar, facebook, a subnet calculator and the browser, they'd be fine on my old phone, but I get a much smoother experience from my HTC Desire and as sad as it sounds I enjoy having it.

My phone's certainly not the same price as the iPhone 4 (it wouldn't matter if it was), but it's still a luxury I don't actually need, but I want it, I can afford it so I'm happy to pay for it. If I actually wanted an iPhone 4 I'd have one of them instead. The OSF is a great budget smartphone and I've recommended it to plenty of people, but there's plenty of better phones available and although it would fit my needs perfectly I wanted more.

Lack of knowledge with IT products isn't the issue, people spending money they can't afford and signing up to lengthy contracts they don't understand is the issue, not people buying higher end phones than they actually need.

Cannot agree more. I think this was the main idea of the thread. Many people in the same position as you tried to justify having a luxury phone by saying that they really needed it. This is just a self-deception.
...people spending money they can't afford and signing up to lengthy contracts they don't understand is the issue, not people buying higher end phones than they actually need.
Yet another self-deception when signing up for lengthy and expensive contacts with (almost) free phone is that they need these thousand(s) of minutes, texts and megabites. In fact they would never use that much if the airtime came even at a lower price, but without a flashy phone.

Lack of knowledge is a problem...

e.g. years ago when brought my HTC Hero, my colleague who works in IT too, was flashing off his iphone, i showed him my phone, he
said its an iphone wannabe and assumed it wasnt multitouch he was suprised that it was! He thought only iphones had multitouch capability?

Another e.g. my friend who is upto his eyeballs in debt went out and brought an iphone, i questioned him why? he said its because you can download apps

What Nokia phone is it you have?

Nokia 5230 only thing it did not have was wi-fi, but I don't know if
that is necessary, I think it gives free web access if you can find a free wifi point. Not sure how many of them there are.
I think there is one with wifi and the other like mine has 3g (whatever that is).

Phones are too small for surging IMO. I sometimes use if for web access when I visit my parents who have no internet. It is capped in charge at £1 a day, but here are other options if you use it more, on tarrifs).
I will only use it a handful of time a year if that.

Best thing is it is a touch screen and you can download free apps which means it can do anything a iphone can do IMO.
Also had free maps but with internet access that is superfluous.
