Some people's whole self worth and indentity is tied up in their over indebted house

I think its realising a balance between having "things" that money CAN buy, while not missing out on the things money CANNOT buy. I think everyone has an optimum level to be in debt to material things, which allows them to have nice things, live in a nice environment while not selling their soul or being a workaholic.
We where approved to borrow £190-200k by our lender, but we only borrowed £92k, we figured we would rather have less and be more comfortable. Don't get me wrong though, I am often mislead into thinking that I will be happy when I buy new things, which of course I never am. Sure the toys are nice but I don't need them.
What I find most amazing is that people generally do things to impress people they actually care about least! For example, you wear expensive clothes, drive expensive cars etc just to impress strangers, the people who care most about you and you care most about don't care about these things.
I do think that material things are important SOMETIMES, but only if they don't come at the cost of other things such as family, morals and integrity.0 -
I find the people who are least concerned about money are those that have enough.
While I know no-one who is terrified by falling house prices, I certainly know people in negative equity which caused considerable practical difficulties and would not welcome further falls.0 -
This doen't just apply to houses.
Most people like to have stuff because if they don't 'what will other people think??'
I personally don't give a stuff about material things, as long as I have what I NEED. However I am lucky I don't have to worry about how to pay the next bill or where my next meal is coming from, others are not so lucky.Aug 24 - Mortgage Balance £242,040.19

You Guys going on what you are saying cannot be happy without wealth, i can
Why do you rant about it then? Constantly.
Someone who is happy with what they have woudn't be posting bile filled, venomous tirades on forums like this. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Telling everyone he doesn't care what people think while asking people what they think about him not caring about what people think. Of course0

Because i feel strongly about it sweety:)
I shall also be protesting about our brave troops dying in Iraq, and the drilling for oil in Artic etc etc
nothing wrong with fighting for what you believe in, and at least i have the joy of going home at night(unlike some in the world) to a nice big bowl of stew and crusty bread in front of a woodburner.:)0 -
All I know is, I'm happier now with cash in the bank, a nice car, a house and loads of other expensive "stuff" that I don't need, than I ever was when I was broke and living with my parents.0
