Has anybody else been ripped off by financial arbitration ltd ? We were daft enough to let a woman called anita into our house and pay her £600 to get rid of our debts with barclay card. She later phones and took another £600 to remove debts with halifax. She claimed they broke the law by not getting us to sign for increase in credit. She then ignored our calleds and now they have gone bust. Cant believe this woman..she saw our kids and finances in amess she must have no heart

How did you pay the £600? If it was by credit card you can probably do a chargeback.0

You need to head to the pure money section of MSE, but to be honest, these firms work on your desperation to get rid of debt (but if you had 1200 to pay her, then things shouldnt have been so bad), and I dont think there is much you can do (not sure you could do a chargeback for a service that was basically trying to wipeout ur credit card debt on a legality....)....sorry if that sounds harsh.
On a plus note, if you get yourself over to the debt free wannabe (under pure money), theres ALOT of knowledgeable people there who are able to advise on how best to tackle your situation. They'll likely ask for a statement of affairs (SOA), which is a detailed list of incomings and outgoings, and they'll be able to advise cutbacks, or ways to reduce, or even, if the situation is dire, what the best way to help would be.
Thinking about the first part of your query, is the firm regulated by the FSA?? Might be worth giving them a call, what sort of contract do you have? Honestly, get yourself over to the pure money bit, try under credit cards to ask about the firm that ripped you off, but brace yourself, they are a bit harsh at first, theres a lot of people there trying desperately to pay of credit cards, loans etc, so dont take kindly to trying to 'bypass' the system, but they really do know their stuff, and how to get your money back. The debt free wannabe lot are a lot more sympathetic, but maynot have the specialist knowledge on this kind of thing.

This happened to us last year!
A company went bust without helping us with wiping our debt off!
Infact we phoned them one day to find the line dead and then went on the net to find they had gone bust!
I paid the fee on credit card, so got a copy of the statement and basically sent off to credit card company for my money back via their insurance as we never received the service we paid for!
Didn't mention it was to wipe off debt as they never asked!

Can I just add, in these times of economic problems, the bottomfeeders of the world are filling their boots using peoples desperation to make money for themselve. I get at least a call a day from an automated line, saying they can wipe my debt, how would they know???
If you dont come into contact with these people, ask yourselves the same question. Have they seen your credit agreement? What info do they already have about you, if its very little, how on earth would they know there may be an irregularity on your agreements??
Add that to the fact that a lot of the countrys judges are now allowing, for example, photocopied agreements etc, and the fact that if you ask the question on this forum, people can usually tel you for free!!
Honestly, anyone that is feeling the pinch a little too much, head over to the Debtfree Wannabe board, I've picked up LOADS of useful information over there (allowing me to have money spare for the grabbits)
