This thread has just reminded me that my son bought a grow-your-own Alpine strawberries kit in Home Bargains - I think it was 79p.
The instructions said to put the seeds in the freezer for a couple of weeks, so I chucked them in... and have absolutely no idea where, and a freezer crammed full of food. :rotfl:

Oh well, that can be a game for him - find the tiny pack of seeds carefully hidden...
Please tell me you didn't chuck them in the bottom of a ruddy great chest freezer like my son did.... I'm gonna be holding on to his ankles later while he's fishing them out :rotfl: He's a stroppy teenager too at the mo so i can't guarantee I'll be able to resist the urge to let go of his ankles and shut the lid once he's in! (after he's passed me the seeds out of course) ;)

I've bought so many strawberries my garden is gonna look like a pick your own field :o

Only buying pressies if they are mega cheap, heavily discounted or free.
:rotfl:Tighter than a duck's bottom and proud of it :rotfl:
  • i have to clear part of my strawberry bed and will have quite a few runners going spare ;)

We are trying some mara des bois this year following advice from a friend who runs an allotment, they are supposed to be as sweet as wild strawberries but larger - sounds yummy to me!

My dad grew some strawberries from seed, certain types dont produce runners so you have to grow them from seed. Most plants are grown from runner because its so much easier than seed.
  • I have to admit I bought some plants as well as back ups :D

Gonna plant them out this weekend - can I plant them in grow bags?

Don't do what my mum did and plant strawberries on the route from the drive up to the house - as my brother and step father walked past they'd swipe whichever ones were ripe and she got ONE left in the entire year.

I've just bought a pre-done hanging basket of them this year as the garden's still in a state of chaos from just moving in - if it works, it works, if not - I keep banging my head on the wretched thing anyway.

they should do fine in growbags - just don't be tempted by the really cheap growbags on the market - the quality can be pretty poor

They are not know for supersweetness. They are know for combining the heavenly flavour and explosive aromas found in woodland strawberries, in a medium sized fruit, as opposed to the tiny woodland strawbs.

    How are they doing?

When I was having problems with the fungus gnats I banished my seedlings to a table outside. They've been there for a week or two now (even overnight with the low temperatures) and surprisingly haven't died yet! In fact, one of them seems to be doing quite well and has even grown its second leaf

Hi, I thought I'd posted a reply to this but it appears not. I am up to 21 seedlings from my £1 purchase at all stages from one that is just poking through the compost to some which have 2 leaves. :j Fingers crossed for some fruit!

There's a flower bud starting to appear on one of the alpine strawberry plants I'm growing from seed!

I will say it wasn't the easiest thing to grow from seed. From 1 pack of seed I got around 20 seedlings. Only 6 of these survived and are now planted outside. They don't have very strong roots when they're little and seem to die easily. Still quite proud of myself though.
