Strawbery from seed?

My hopefulness has just take a knock as mine are still not showing any sign of germinating. On a more positive note the rhubarb 99p propagator has been a triumph with all the seeds germinating. We'll see what happens as growing rhubarb from seed can apparently be a bit hit and miss with reference to getting them to come true and of course I will need to wait a while before my first harvest - just as well that I am a patient sort and like to have the odd experiment ongoing in the garden.
I read that they need light to germinate. Not sure if this is true but this could be your problem if they're in the airing cupboard. Not sure what sort of temperatures they need... maybe you could put them on a warm windowsill?0 -

Seen the stacking pots in 99p shop - 3 pots per stack.0

Runners are so easy to grow. Right when they grow runners, get some pots ready with compost, stick the white shoots into the compost and hold down with a metal cable tie thing, water well, dont cut from the other plant till the roots have fully grown, then cut away from the main plant and do this many times as you wish and bobs your uncle.Kind Regards

I was wondering if that might be part of the problem so I'll try and bring them out into the light and see if they sprout.:T0 -

Before you go for the ebay purchase check out your local B&M - they have stackable trio planters for £1 each which might do the same job. Poundland do them for £1.50 too I think.
Thank you very much for that. I got some now! Never been to B&M before, got loads of other stuff too... They really shouldn't let me go into shops...:-)0 -
This thread has just reminded me that my son bought a grow-your-own Alpine strawberries kit in Home Bargains - I think it was 79p.
The instructions said to put the seeds in the freezer for a couple of weeks, so I chucked them in... and have absolutely no idea where, and a freezer crammed full of food. :rotfl:
Oh well, that can be a game for him - find the tiny pack of seeds carefully hidden...0 -

It's been in my airing cupboard for just over a week So far nothing has come up, they've been in about 9 days, but I understand they can take some time. I'll keep you updated on my progress but for 99p I thought it was worth a punt.
I got those too and havent seen any sproutingFreedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

Hi guys,
How difficult is it to grow strawbery from seed? I would like plenty of strawberies (currently only have 5 plants - small garden) and I've just seen fantastic stackable strawbery planter on Ebay for only £15.
It gives 18 potting spaces.
However strawbery plants around here are around £1 mark, so that would make the crop quite expensive..
I would like to try and grow my own from seed for that number, is there a good reason for everyone always buying plants? I don't know anyone who grown strawbery from seed...
Thanks

at circa 25p each for a quality flavoursome variety, (royal sovereign), its a steal. best to buy plants rather than seeds, less hassle.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).

I just snip the runners off then plant them, 95% have grown.Freedom is the freedom to say that 2+2 = 4 (George Orwell, 1984).
