Without reading 5 pages, this post left me very uncomfortable.

When did they stop putting "crankcase ventilation" in an engine? You can't build up pressure if the crankcase is ventilated, so no blowing out the dipstick hole. Also, presssure in the crankcase could pressurise oil into going where it shouldn't, because it should drain down from various locations.

I'm not happy with the diagnosis at all, regarding what the fault is.

    Hi Mrs E
Please could you help me with a simple question about the trade-in your daughter is doing.... I also have a 2009 Ka which I'm trying to trade in with my ford dealer - however it couldnt go through as I dont have a key code card - apparently they dont work the main key and 2nd key system anymore and now give you a key code card (looks a bit like a credit card - ford written on one side, picture of a key and some numbers on the other...) I want to know if your daughter has one (im dubious that I ever had one and since I dont have it the deal cant go through or ill have to pay £1000 to change all the locks etc etc) Please if you could help me that would be great as im at my wits end!!!

She was offered the trade in (before all this) but hasn't ever looked into it seriously.
I showed her your post & she has no idea what you mean......

    1. what oil did her BF put in? 10 30 - 5 40 or what? fully synth semi synth, cheap and nasty tesco oil or a named brand? you cant put any old oil in a zetec/duratec theres a specific grade in wich to stick by as other type of oils can cause problems and or mixing oils will cause problems.

a blocked breather is a possabilty but doesnt explain the oil in cyl 4, back pressure could have caused it to pass through the rings, but a build up inbetween rings can have its problems in it own right. plus if pressure stopped the valves from fully opening and closing they could have bent causing damage to piston 4 and the cam lobes ,valve stem seals.

just to clarify WHO CHANGED THE OIL as first you say a garage did it the you say her BF did it?

or is it a case of her BF works in said garage and did it in spare time?

Her BF topped up oil in his monthly checks & the night of the Tesco incident he topped up then too, no idea what oil, but DD says it was expensive for a little bottle.

The garage did a full drain & re oil at the service.

oil is expensive no matter the make they rise when fuel does but branded oil use specific addetives to lubracate, last, protect and cost more cheap oils are basic oils and do nothing special.

as someone suggested it maybe a case of the garage over filled it causing pressure to build up. spooled up past the piston and caused the compression to go up stopping the valves opening and closing causing damage untill the engine is inspected properly and diagnosed accuratly theres nothing no one can do, warranty is void due to lack of service as recomended by manufacterer so comes as an expensive lesson. the ford dealer would be able to come to an agreement about other parts that could be warrented by them such as interior electica,l suspension and body work but you dd would have her work cut out to get that i think.

Can't agree with this at all!

How can oil "spool up past the pistons", when the piston rings are there to stop it?
IF.....oil did spool up past the pistons, then it wouldn't stop the valves opening ...... the piston would try and compress it, and you end up with your con rods through the side of the block.

My thoughts are, crankcase pressure is preventing oil drain down from the camshaft, and it is being forced down the valve stem oil seals. They aren't capable of taking pressure, they're only meant to protect from oil run down.

Thank you (that almost proves my point lol) Basically she should apparently have a plastic card (shaped like a debit card) in her Ford pack (somewhere with her maual, paperwork etc) but I dont remember ever seeing/having it. Thanks again.

the rings wont stop it passing if force is at play.

Seems like the engine was overfilled with oil. That can damage the rings because of over pressurising the system. Some oil has fouled the spark plug. The spark plug will be black/sooty when it is taken out.

Her BF says though he checked the oil, he never put any in, as it never needed any.
Then the chugging started at Tesco & he put in Castrol GTX & had it serviced the following day.
Then it happened again 2 weeks later.

So something (other than oil) made it start chugging the first time & the warning light come on.

Unless her BF wasn't checking as dilegently as he says & it was indeed dry of oil outside Tesco.

But as they got oil into it asap, would that account for the chugging again 2 weeks later & the oily plug?

What is compression? It's the normal function of rings to oppose force. From either direction.
