Hello everyone, i am wondering if you could help me, this is my current situation:
I am living in a 3 bedroom private rented property until i get a permanent home with the council.
This is the benefits i get at present:
Carer's Allowance £53.00 every Monday
Child benefit £47.00 every Tuesday
Income Support £82.00 every two weeks
Child Tax Credit £760.00 every 4 weeks
Disability Allowance £260.00 every 4 weeks
Housing Benefit of £849.48 a month paid direct to Landlord for rent
Family details:
Myself on the above benefits
Child (1) 5 years old
Child (2) 14 years old and has a Disability
Child (3) 18 years old and is at college and also claiming EMA
My help i need is because the above Child (3) is leaving college in a week and is gonna go on JSA until he finds a job.
How would this affect the above benefits and by how much?
Also in the near future the kids father will be moving into my home once he gets better from mental illness, he is currently on ESA (income related)
Also how would this affect me. i just need this information so i can prepare myself.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Regards
Denise

Hopefully someone will be able to come and give you advice on this as im not really sure how either will affect things for benefits purposes. Are you sure you have your figures right though? It seems like a hell of alot of benefit you receive, it works out at £396 per week and then your house rent is paid on top of that. Just incase you have the figures wrong.0

I assume you get Carer's Allowance because child 2 is disabled and recieving DLA Care at either the middle or higher rate? If that is correct then the DLA Care will mean their income (the one leaving education) will not be counted whether they are working or not.
As for your children's father moving in (I may be wrong as only going off my own experiences) if he's still on benefit you will have to claim as a couple. My husband is on my Carer's Allowance claim but I don't think that can happen now as just after my claim last year the rules changed. I think he would have to include you on his ESA claim and because you're a carer (you don't actually get CA but rather have an underlying entitlement to it) you get an extra £30ish on top of the couple's rate of ESA.
I'm sure there will be others with more advice along soon.0 -
With the eldest leaving college there will be no change to your housing or council tax benefit. The nondependant deductions do not start until 25 for people claiming jsa.0
-
In the first instance when your child leaves education im pretty sure you will lose the child benefit you receive for him so that's £20.30 per week for your eldest child and you will also lose some child tax credits if you are still receiving them for him.0

You can double check the impact of your partner moving in by entering their details with yours into the Turn2us online benefit calculator.
You can also see how the proposed changes to the Local Housing Allowance for private sector tenants could affect you here

Many thanks for so many quick replies:T
So it looks like the following would stay the same:
Carer's Allowance £53.00 every Monday
Income Support £82.00 every two weeks
Disability Allowance £260.00 every 4 weeks
Housing Benefit of £849.48 a month paid direct to Landlord for rent
And these would change:
Child benefit from £47.00 too £31.32 ish (for 2 children)
Child Tax Credit £760.00 too £506.00 ish (for 2 children)
When my son leaves college?
Dunno why but when i told my estate agent who deals with the landlord he said to me in these words "I hope you have some savings as you will lose a lot of housing benefits once your child leaves full time education and goes on JSA as he will not be a dependent child anymore and will become non-dependent and your home will be classed down from a 3 bedroomed home to a 2 bedroomed home" or is he trying to scare me?0 -
He is lying, obviously doesn't know what he is talking about. You will have no change as I said above. No deduction until he reaches 25 when claiming jsa. The lha rate will not change at all0

Many thanks, you have put my mind at ease regarding housing benefit, that was my biggest worry, i knew in the back of my mind that i would lose child benefit & child tax credit for my eldest son once he left full time education as it makes sense, but i was confused and worried when he said to me about the housing benefit as i thought in my mind "How can they take away housing benefits if he is still living with me":shocked:0 -
