Road Tax

2

Comments

  • Surely when the whole country gets round to driving £20-30 a year VED vehicles, the govt will have to up the VED. To cover the short fall from all the £200 a year vehicles which are no longer on the roads.

Or they could just introduce a road tax of some description.
Something that was chargeable to everyone that used the roads.
Might stop smart arsed "whats road tax" questions.
Although apparently the goverment look into road tax evasion.

Even although it cant possibly exist.

You could always get one of these:
I enjoy doing my own servicing/repairs and the simpler the car the better. That looks expensive if it goes wrong :)

The next car I get will be a 2001+ to take advantage of the emissions based taxation system, but it'll be as simple, reliable and as easy to work on as possible. :)

My old L reg cost me 205 in tax last month, for the next year.

Oh well, at least i will lose nothing in depreciation this year, the same as last year, and the year before that.

Just buy a pre 2001 car with a smaller engine, £125 for cars up to around 1.6L.

This is true, I used to own a 1998 Fiesta 1.25 which was better on the tax, but I prefer diesels now, and there aren't many of them around in 1.6 or below that would be suitable for my motorway driving. However I may consider switching back to an older petrol car if all the diesels from 2001+ have all that common rail rubbish and other compliexities, or maybe I'll just keep to older diesels and swallow the unfair cost of tax. Its something I'll have to look up when I think of changing car (hoping to get another year out of this banger at least).

Well it's been going up by £5 a year for a while now but this sudden £15 was a bit of an imposition. I'll have to start giving the old 2 litre a bit more welly now to get my money's worth.

How come nobody has mentioned the increase in Road Tax for older cars? My tax has gone up by £15 this year to £205 and I drive less than 2000 p/a.

It was plenty of times when it was announced

Yeah, I find it pretty disgusting paying over £200 for an economical 45-50mpg Diesel when people with sports cars and big engined heavy repmobiles are paying a lot less than that. Oh well.

Why? They are paying more in VAT and Duty via petrol, servicing etc.
It's purely based on CO2 emmissions not how much you use the road or how fast you car can go.

Other option is to abandon VED and add it to petrol cost of course

The fairest option of all, albeit the timing would need to be right.. ;)
