My last one was embarrassing. I got a female doctor - not my own GP. She made me feel stupid before she even started as she seemed to scoff at the idea that I didn't like to use tampons (I only use them on my heaviest day), and then after the smear where they press down on your belly to feel your insides, she said I had a fat belly and poked at it a few times as if to prove a point. I was mortified. It's bad enough getting one in the first place but to be embarrassed in front of someone else (the practice nurse was also there) is horrible. I've never had a problem when i've got one from a male GP.

I had two failed smears last year, not enough cells or something. It was a right nuisance having to have it done 3 times in a few weeks. Still preferable to the alternative though and it's a great feeling when you get the letter to say you've got the all clear and you don't have to bother about it for 3 years.

Ah sorry I meant they couldn't actually get the thingy inside me to take the swab the first time :o Was far too tense I think.

I had my first one last november. I was worried sick about it, found it slightly painful and the nurse said 'oh you've lost a fair bit of blood here' which terrified me as I had read online that if it makes you bleed it's a sign that something is wrong.

Cue me being worried sick until the results came in the post, saying that I had to go again in 6 months time due to possible changes in my cells :(, which is next month. I'm really worried about it :( especially as at the first one she asked if I'd been having any pains lately, and I was so worried that I lied and said no :( I will be honest next month though. Argh.

I don't know the answer to your question (although my guess would be that as cervical cancer is not sexually related everyone should have a smear test, regardless of sexual activeness or not), but I'm sure if you ask at your surgery they will be able to tell you.

Better feeling worried, safe in the knowledge that if anything is going on, it will be dealt with rather than be happy in your ignorance because you haven't had a smear and you think everything is ok. Iyswim.

I can only imagine how you're feeling, but it's only possible changes at the moment so try not to fret yourself silly and imagine allsorts. Although if you're anything like me, that will be hard to do.

Oh my, she'd have a ball with me then. I've had a section and have got that fetching flabby apron thing going on. :rotfl:

I would have told her she had a fat gob to match!

Seriously, how the hell some of these work in this profession, I don't know!

You should have complained, I would have.

  • I don't like getting my smear done - but ladies you MUST go!

Seriously, a few minutes of being uncomfortable is all it takes to save a life.

Is it just me, or does anyone do their 'haircut' specially for the smear day :rotfl: I make more of an effort for the nurse than for OH LOL!!

Have talked to friends like this and they are the same. Hilarious :D

It's just one of those things in life that you gotta do. I'd rather have a smear test than a job interview, or take my car in for MOT! :o

I'm 25 and I've had 3 cos they start earlier in Wales, and I had to have one repeated (think they lost the result lol). It can feel uncomfortable and once it hurt a bit and I bled. But in the grand scheme of things it's no biggie. Tell the nurse you're nervous and she will understand.

Good luck to those psyching yourself up for it. You can do it! Just lie back and think of England! (or Wales/Scotland/Wherever)

Completely unprofessional. I would have had to say something to her, in a jokey sort of way but making the point.
