What about the other direct debits & standing orders? I have around 10 no?

Maybe open another account for 8 of them (use this account as you use your current one), and then use the switching service for the account with 2 remaining.

Bit of hassle opening another, but, in the age of online applications, it's not really time consuming.

Can I ask Santander to just switch 2 direct debits and leave all other commitments with my current bank?

Not sure. If you use the switching service they may just do all or nothing.

    Steer well clear.

Apart from all the bad press they get on here (a financial forum) I personally know SEVERAL people whose accounts they have screwed up.
    • Mine and my brothers for starters, Just being resolved now (though still not finished) - problem started in November 2010 (that we know of).
    • They lost a £50,000.00 cheque from my step-father-in-law when we were selling our flat/buying our house.
    • A guy at work has had terrible problems with them in regards to his late wife's accounts.
    • August last year they sent out 37,000 statements with incorrect details on (either incorrect names/addresses or correct name and address but wrong statement)
    • January this year they sent out another 22,000

Are you sure you want to join the list of highly stressed, irate, Santander customers?

Look down for my personal view

The only product I have with Santander is their Zero credit card, which is probably the only product worth having (fortunately alternatives like Halifax Clarity now exist) and I phoned them today.

I dialled the number for credit card customer services on the back of my credit card, but my call was routed to bank account customer services, who got totally confused when I gave a 16-digit card number when they were expecting an 8-digit bank account number. The bank account people have no ability to service credit card accounts - what a shambles. After a long chat with a guy in an Indian call centre, I got the impression that they are just as fed up as customers are with having to deal with Santander's mistakes created in the UK. The problem is these guys in India are not given the authority to rectify all these mistakes.

If someone offered you a STD and £100 would you go for it?

Appriciate everyone views and comments. Just started reading on another thread ref Santander and the problems he had. I think in the long term it's not going to be worth it, Short term possibly but that depends on the service I recieve. I spoke to Santander customer services for extra info and the lady I spoke to said they have a 98% success rate in switching accounts? mmmmmm don't know about that statistic.

  • For what it's woth i switched a HSBC current account over to Santander - no problems at all, got my £100 within weeks and am enjoying the 5% interest which gets paid each month.

All my direct debits were switched with no problems.

Must admit i don't really use this account for anything too complicated, have wages paid in and pay all bills using this account but day-to-day banking and spending money comes out of DH's wages which get paid into another account. Therefore i suppose I have no reason to contact them and so couldn't tell you what their customer service is like.

Only thing that does gripe me with Santander is that they send both myself and DH paper statements each month and i can't seem to switch this off, otherwise i must be one of the rare people who has no complaints.
