In my experience using Card Readers from Barclay, Coop I also find it annoying. Imagine people are in their office and suddenly they want to see their online account. Do they need to go home first ???

It really is rubbish - something else to add to my large collection of card readers - at least with card readers they all seem to work the same - hoe many of these secureid devices am I am going to have to carry round - and imagine you are away on business or holiday and lose it - bye bye to accessing your banking for a few weeks. Yes it protects the banks, doesn't do anything for the customers tho :(

We got these recently and I think they are rather annoying, I get mine and my partners mixed up. And I have trouble with the buttons too.

I like the idea of the santander one time pass code, sadly I have been locked out of my online account for almost 4 weeks now so no good to me.

Everything will be ok in the end, and if it isn't ok then it isn't the end :)

I got the letter today and I am not at all pleased. Yes, it's to enhance security, but there are better methods as already mentioned in this thread, such as the one time passcode via SMS.

For me, this is a lazy, cumbersome and annoying implementation. My wallet is already more full than I would like with various cards and passes and this is not something I want to carry around. I tried calling earlier to see if there's any way to log on without this device but still use it for payments, but I gave up after waiting on hold for 28 minutes...

Do you need this security key then to access online banking via HSBC? (is it really needed!?) or this an option? im confused

From a lengthy discussion with their CS staff, it's possible to delay using it by 30 days initially and by a further 30 days by negotiation with CS but, ultimately, you either use it or your online access to your account(s) will be blocked.
  • i moved away from barclays due to their ridiculous pinsentry device which is required every time you log in and now hsbc follow suit. There is nothing wrong with trying to be more secure but there has to be a better way, what's the point highlighting the convenience of online banking when you need to carry that thing around with you.
RBS/Natwest definitely have the right idea, you need the device to set up new payments but not for logging in/paying someone you've paid before etc

As much as the security tokens do make online banking safer, it is very annoying to have to use it every time you log in. I couldn't agree more with nickmack, wallet too full with all sorts of cards and passes as it is.
Maybe it is time to start thinking of moving away from HSBC...

Can somebody please explain why HSBC couldn't just make this compulsory for new payees to be set up - I really can't see the security risk of being able to view my balances and transfer money between my HSBC accounts. I am just being a bit dim?

I just think this is to much security 'to much security your gonna get locked down ya self' so to say.... why cant it be simple like TSB? enter name address email password and walla

with HSBC tho we need this 3rd party device i am not going to be carrying this in my wallet doubt it fit anyway... but i also want to access online banking where ever i am that includes abroad and so on....

at least with TSB/HALIFAX/RBS/SANTANDER etc you dont need some 3rd party device.
