Thank you to everyone who has replied - I'm still reeling from the loss of my furry friend.
Not sure yet whether I'll ever have another as this has been so hard :-(
I'm 3 months on. I still miss him and I still can't face having another one. It does get easier.
I hope you feel better soon xLBM: August 2006 £12,568.49 - DFD 22nd March 2012

One of my cats died on Monday night - I found him on sunday without the use of his back legs and breathing difficulties - the vet reckons that he had a blod clot. They looked after him overnight on Sunday but he died monday night - we had a call and I was on my way to the vets, but didn't make it in time.
I had him cremated and got his ashes back yesterday so that we could scatter them in the field behind our house.
Haven't had the vet bill yet (just a card in the post today from them symphathising over our loss) but the cremation cost £50.0 -

I'm taking my little old girl Gemma to be PTS later today, it's something I know has to happen but I feel dreadful all the same. I'd never let her suffer but I know it's time. She has always been a grumpy little so and so but she is properly miserable now. In the last couple of days she's lost her sight to a huge degree, and her walking into walls is breaking my heart. She's 17 and she's just suffering with everything that old age has brought her; she can't wash, she's deaf, her teeth are giving her gip, she's lost weight, she spends a lot of time staring at the walls and crying and now with the blindness, I think it's time. I feel like I need to justify my decision to myself though, both cats I have had PTS had kidney failure and it was soooo obvious they were suffering that I didn't have a moment's thought when it came to it; they were suffering, no mistaking that. But this time...I don't know...Gemma still purrs when I stroke her head...Do I wait until she can no longer get any pleasure from being touched?? I'm sorry for putting it all on here but I just feel like I need other animal lovers to understand what Gemma and me are going through right now.
Incidentally, on topic, the vet has told me £35 for euthanasia with an extra £30 for multi-cremation and sprinkling on their pet cemetary (I would bury her but we are moving on Thursday).0 -
Tattyuk - I'm so sorry for your dilemma and hope you have been able to do what you need to do for dear Gemma.
For what it's worth, my dear old Marmaduke also still purred right up until I had to make that most awful of decisions. He was 17 years and 10 months, had gone deaf and was blind in one eye. He was eating very little by the time he was PTS, although still drinking and wanting to go out.
I had the vets to him at home and was told his breathing was stressed and although it broke my heart, I decided to let him go before his suffering got worse, as I couldn't bear to see that happen.
My thoughts and prayers are with you tonight (((Hugs)))RIP Marmaduke 04.02.11, MIsty 09.06.12 and Rufus 19.7.24 very, very sadly missed xxx

Thank you so much for your reply Neffy - I did make the right decision and Gemma was PTS at lunchtime yesterday. It was so quick and peaceful...apart from me sobbing as quietly as I could that is... It's such a hard decision to make until you actually make it, and then it seems like the decision was easy to not let her suffer any more. The vets were lovely, as I knew they would be.
Much love to you and a big cuddle to Marmaduke wherever he is now xx0 -
Thinking of you Tattyuk and of little old Gemma - so glad it was quick and peaceful and that you were with her until the end.
I still feel heartbroken at having to let my lovely Marmaduke go, but know that I'll have some wonderful memories to treasure after the sadness has passed.
I have one of my favourite photos of him on my mantelpiece, so that I can still 'see' him, and I also have his ashes in a nice wooden box nearby.
I do hope all goes well with your move and that in time, you too will be remembering Gemma fondly.:A Gemma:AMarmaduke:A

Sorry for your loss.
I had my cat individually cremated. It cost about £100 and I think the box was extra.
I couldn't bear to scatter his ashes either so I've left instructions that when I go, he goes with me. Sounds daft, doesn't it.0 -

Not daft at all, Gloomendoom. We had a Doberman who had to be pts in 1994; he was cremated, and the ashes returned to us. Years - and I mean, years - later, we decided that we were ready to let him go, so we took the ashes to the local crematorium, where my close family members have been cremated over the years, and scattered them in the glade where their ashes have been scattered, and where my ashes will be scattered when the time comes (it's in my will).
I posted earlier in the thread about my little Oliver - his ashes are here, and when I'm ready to let him go, they will be scattered in the same place. One day, in the distant future, we will all be reunited.0
