Cracked my Terramundi

Hi all,
I thought I'd post about cracking my terramundi pot. I had a quick search and couldn't find posts where people put how much was in it when they cracked it. I could well have missed it, so point me in the right direction if there is a place. If not, I propose other people post their terramundi totals here.
This is my 3rd Terramundi pot, first contained silver and pounds and I had about £350, second contained pounds and 50ps and I had £450 and this one contained only pounds and some notes and the grand total is:
£586 in pound coins
£130 in notes
£716 which I think is good going. It takes me 9-12 months to fill it up normally. I also have some random loose change I haven't taken to the bank in a while and it adds to £76 which gives me a total of £792 going into my bank ASAP.
How is everyone else doing with their pots? Anyone cracked their pot recently?
I think it's a good way of saving for me. I have been told before on this forum that saving money using terramundi pots is not good moneysaving (think of all the interest I'm losing etc and the fact you buy the pot) so I've added it's a good way for me. Note there are better ways out there for other people to save.
I like it because I don't notice it being saved as it's easy to put a few pounds in and not feel it hit you. I'm also more likely to spend my change if it's in my purse. If I don't have change in my purse I won't buy that £3 coffee I don't need on the way to the office, therefore getting rid of my change temptation .
I cannot touch the money which is great. I know I could just put x amount into a savings account (I already do that) but if I put £700 more into a savings account a year I know I would dip into it (there is something about having the physical money and then putting it away physically). Somehow dumping my change into a pot is easier. Well it works for me. I just thought I'd add the disclaimer this time and say yes there are better ways to save your money but this works for me and I'd rather save £700 in loose change a year than put that extra £700 into a savings account resenting it and finally dipping into it.
Anyone else have any terramundi experiences they want to share?
Good luck everyone with their pots.

ps they make great presents, I have bought many for engagement and house warming gifts (better if you get them personalised with names and dates).

Just wanted to say I love my Terramundi. The one I have at the moment is my first ever and I was bought it as a present.
I am currently saving only £2 coins and have been for doing this for about 3 months but I think mine has a whole in as it doesn't seem to be getting any fuller. Keeping fingers crossed that it will hold quite a lot when I crack it open.
How do you open yours? Because I would like to use it for something after and don't want it in 100s of pieces there must be an elegant way to do it that I haven't thought of.Weekly Spend Challenge: £0/£30

Hi, my first terramundi was a present. I think many people start this way and this is why I like to give them as presents. The idea is when you crack it you use some of the money saved to buy a new one. I buy mine from a local shop (official reseller). I buy the official terramundi pots located here as they will personalise the pots for you. The people are very nice, and dispatch really quick.
I don't know about cheap ones, try ebay or google.
As for cracking there is a certain way to do so. Hammer and chisel and hit it in the corner of the money slot and it cracks in one go (like the top of a pot coming off). Two of mine worked very well and it converts into a plant pot easily. The last one cracked in one go but not as well and I suspect it was because I overfilled it. I was literally shaking the pot to make more room and stuffing in pounds and I think that makes cracking more difficult. It was cool to see it completely crammed with pounds.
The official ones are created in such a way so cracking is easy and produces a reusable pot. I'm not sure if this is the same with the cheap ones.
As for saving £2, I'd imagine it you'd get a lot in there if I got £586 in pounds. Bizarrely I save all change but not £2. I don't get many and it takes forever to build up a collection. I spend them. The only change I don't mind spending.
It does seem like it takes your pot forever to fill. As I said it takes me around 9-12 months to fill and I'd imagine £2 may be longer as you don't get as many of them.
I remember my first one and I kept thinking it was nearly full but it wasn't. As you'll see it's wide near the top and it takes the longest to fill. Don't be tempted to crack it too early. I think my first one I could have fitted more in.
If you know the weight of the pot before and you are saving only one type of coin, you can use scales to see how you are doing (calculate what weight the coins are and thus how much you have). I didn't do this as I didn't want to ruin the surprise.
I'd like to know other peoples' totals out of interest. The pots I have given as presents normally contain £200-£400 at cracking time. I think pounds or two pounds are the best thing to save in it with my preference now being pounds.
Good luck0 -
Prezzybox sell Terra and you'll be able to blag a discount voucher online!
I love my terramundi too! I did raid mine not so long ago and banked the money cause of the whole terramundi v savings account situation! I only put £2 coins in mine, but I've also got a silvers tin and a coppers piggybank! once I've filled the silvers tin I will chuck it all in the terra so it fills up quicker and so I get to crack it!
I herd through the vine a terra holds £850 of £2 coins!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 092

Thank you for this thread - you have given me a wonderful idea. As my sister is pregnant and due on 30th June :j :j I'm going to buy a Terramundi and fill it until she gives birth to my little niece/nephew (I'm convinced it's a little girl
).
When Little Em is born (currently called Little Em as he/she is only an embryo) I will crack the Terramundi and start a savings account for them
Now I just need to buy one - does anyone know of any high-street stores that sell them?

Im not sure where you can buy one on the high street, but https://www.terramundi.co.uk is where i bought mine recently - my first purchase - a gift for christmas. The price shown includes p&p which is better than a lot of gift sites where they charge you £3.99 although the pot is cheaper. My local garden centre sells them too in the gift section but they are more expensive at £19.99!
Hope this helps.Experience is the toughest teacher because she gives the test first then the lesson

Thank you - I've just purchased one from Prezzybox. I also found a lovely pregnancy pampering kit that I can give my sister for Christmas. Aren't I a caring Auntie

i havent tried this but i suspect that if you put some very strong (ie duct tape) across the bottom of the pot, and the drill through the base slowly and gently with a fine drill bit, you should be able to make a hole without craking the pot (the duct tape should help).
you could then use some impliment of other to make the hole
a) big enough to get your cash out of
b) big enough to hold a plug/stopper ...so it is still useable as a money box if desiredknow thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0 -
Hi,
I'd imagine a terra would hold about £850 in £2 I would have guessed £800 from my own experiences. The terramundi site has a list of stockists and I get mine for £15.99 at one of the registered stockists. A personalised one with friends names and delivery costs around £20 from the official site.
I don't crack mine until full. Crack it making a wish and all that. My first one came with a piece of paper and you write down what you want the money for and pop in it with your first coin. Cool idea. Keeps you focused. Drilling holes may work but I like the idea I wont crack mine until full and love the satisfaction of cracking it in one go. If I could get in or would be inclined to crack it before time I would lose its appeal for me.
It's a good idea for an aunt to do. I'm an aunt, I would just buy the pot and say here you go rather than fill it. Buy then again I have many nieces and nephews.
From knowing how long it takes me to fill mine with pounds and they are more common than £2 my advice to people would be to fill it with pounds and save your £2 another way. It's only because you think your pot is nearly full and in reality you are only about 3/5 of the way (it's very deceptive). If you throw in £2 a day I'd say you'd be on the right track but anything less than that and it will take you well over a year to fill it.
For some bizarre reason a year is a cut off point for me. If it would take me more than a year to fill I'd have to crack it or not use it. I think I just like yearly goals. Saving money for more than a year in a pot I start to really want it out. Again this is just a personal opinion. Think about it if it holds £850 in £2 and then think how many £2 a week you put in, it may take you a while to fill it. Again you may get more £2 than me as I only get a couple a week.
Pounds it will hold £550-£600
pounds and 50ps it will hold £300-£450 depending on the ratio of 50ps to pounds.
mixed silver £200
I hope this helps.0 -
They have a cheaper version (tin) in £land - does the same - you can only open it with a can opener.0
