Don't think me rude, but I hope they don't. It seems as though whenever TV chefs start doing things with cheaper ingredients, those ingredients start increasing in price until they're no longer such a bargain. Look at shank.

Good point. :D I used to regularly buy pork or lamb shoulder because it was cheap but since Jamie Oliver did slow roast pork shoulder and slow roasted lamb shoulder the prices have shot up!

you're so right. I still remember when lamb shanks used make a cheap & tasty meal but since Nigella,Jamie et al started cheffing about with them they're now out of my price range :(

I really enjoyed the programme; what did others think?

I had to smile when one of the Hairy Bikers said that his mum used to mash cauliflower with white pepper and butter, because that's just how my mum always served it; mum did exactly the same thing with carrots as well, both delicious, by-the-way:)

I was surprised to hear them say that cauliflower has gone out of fashion over the last ten years, certainly not in our house, because it was a regular vegetable as I was growing up and I've always bought it regularly since then.

They mentioned Heritage wheat grown in Oxfordshire on the programme and I'm all for supporting the more traditional varieties / growing methods; does anyone know where we can buy the flour?

Looking forward to next week's episode; thanks for the nod, Penelope Penguin:beer:

I had to (sadly) ignore the wonderful bread section of he programme as I'm low-carbing at the moment, but cauliflower is the low carbers friend so loved the section by the Hairy Bikers.
I can't believe cauli has gone out of fashion, I never ever bought it until about 2 years ago when I got into lowcarb cooking and now I buy at least 2 a week.
I use it in place of potato and rice, makes a lovely topping for shepherds pie & cauli pizza base is lush....seriously:D

Ta for the cauli cake recipe PenPenguin, will def give that a go.

    Just watched it on iplayer.
I love artisan's bread, sourdough bread etc YUM.

    *spoiler below*

I love white cauliflower!!! But I'm not so sure about the orange cauliflower that looked a bit alien to me and the green Madonna's bra-like cauliflower :D.

I've had the green (Romanscoe) caulies; saw them for the first time, about 6 months ago and being 'game' for anything 'new' in the vegetable line, I decided to buy one; quite nice, but not as nice as the white ones imo.
I actually loved the look of that orangy'yellow cauliflower and can't wait to find one in the shops. Oh, and they had a purple one as well, I'll try anything once:D

i loved the prog. i missed the first bit , and only started watching it after the loaf bread came out oven and the chef said somethign about syrup ? confused me a bit.

No i hate duck, hate hate hate. but the duck bread pudding thingy looked gorgeous. i'd love to try that.

As for the hairy bikers, well i like those guys anyway. but i found it so interesting then they went to the cauli fields. i love cauli, kids aren't to keen, but i often mash cauli up and put it in a cheese sauce to go with mac and cheese and they love that. i thought the orange one looked brill. not too sure about the alien one. i'm sure there is a purple one also but never seen it.

i must admit i generally buy frozen as a whole cauli is too much for just hubby and i if we have cauli cheese. frozen also works out cheaper. the supermarkets sell really tiny caulis for silly prices, and locally in the veg shops the caulis can be a bit hit and miss in terms on quality. but often they are only about 25-30p. think i might try and walk to veggie shop a bit more to get them from there, as they are island grown which is good.

Not sure i fancy roast cauli but the curry they made looked scrummy.

I love cauli! In fact all brassicas are pretty fantastic.

I will try to catch this on iplayer at some point.

Have to say I was disappointed :( I was hoping for more ideas on making your own bread, especially the sourdough. Every time the camera started to look at the bread, dough, or processing, it quickly cut away to the face of the presenter.

No quantities given, either, so I hope the recipe for the syrup loaf if on the web, as I really fancy having a go at that :)

The HBs were great though - they make cauli cheese like I do (with bacon ;) ) and I will difinitely be trying the curry :T

I agree PenPen, I was hoping for some really good bread making tips, his biggest tip seemed to be to buy it from a local baker.
Love cauli and the recipes, although I know once upon a time they develepoed a black cauli, which was for export, locals never got a look in.

Do I need to eat it :o
    Can I afford the calories:eek:
have I checked for a lower calorie version:T
