It's a lot better than my PC and i can burn CDs and DVDs fine. It may be well worth looking at a new DVD rewriter as Mc4ndy suggested.
Do you know anyone you can borrow one off to confirm it is the drive, although thsi owuld be a little fiddly?
Also how are you burning the discs, are you using software such as Nero or just using windows? It's my problem, it's my problem
If I feel the need to hide
And it's my problem if I have no friends
And feel I want to die0 -
Forgot, fan also sounds dodgy. Reving loudly on and off. I have tried hoovering any dust from it, but no improvemet. The longer the computer is on, the louder/unhealthier it gets.:grouphug: Things can only get better.0

It's really quite easy... Might not be that, do you have any other pc problems? Did in used to work and now doesn't are has it always been the same. What writing software do you use? Are you using very cheap discs or branded? Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow.0

Up to now I have just used windows. I downloaded Nero 7 's 30 trial version yesterday. I have only tried to read one of my own home-made dvd's so far - no good.:grouphug: Things can only get better.0

This is probably bearings starting to go on the fan... Which Fan is it? IE is it the cpu fan or the case fan or the power supply fan? You can replace these too for not much cash. You leave your computer on all the time? Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow.0

Mixture, have tried both cheap and branded, sometimes they wotk sometimes they don't. Problem may have been here for a while as I haven't used the cd or dvd for a while. Are there any diagnostic checks I can run?:grouphug: Things can only get better.0

I used to leave the PC on 24 hrs a day. Don't anymore - DFW has got to me more than looking after the PC.:grouphug: Things can only get better.0

Have just put a 'proper' dvd in and it did show it in windows media player, but it took a very long time to load. Should it be instant?:grouphug: Things can only get better.0

In answer to your original question, you don't need a new PC..
if you go to https://www.videohelp.com, there are guides on everything dvd, it may be that you are using the wrong options in nero?Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -
In the same device manager can you look and see what model the cd/dvd is also? Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow.0
