Could you make a sock monkey from a footie sock for the Newcastle--or any--footie hamper..or at least a sock in appropriate colours?
Thats a good idea ... wonder if I can find some black and white stripey socks. Thanks I picked up a couple of cake toppers from the local cake shop this morning. 1 was a black and white football, and the other was a pair of black and white football boots. cost me £1 for both and I will just either put them in my jar of facts or will just add them loosely to the basket. I think in the army - especially at first can be quite lonely while you are getting to know people. I think you should include some small photos of family and friends. Also things that could help with bridging gaps and making friends cards, dominoes, magnetic games, pass the pigs..... Sweets, cakes, wind up torch, mp3 player, luxuries like shower gel etc I personaly wouldn't make it too army themed as once there he will probably want to think of home... Bright coloured note paper and pens to write home with. An address book of key addresses, contact numbers and e-mails so there is no excuse not to stay in touch... Perhaps a journal for him to write about some of his experiences? Hope that gives you a start....clarabell1984 wrote: »Ok I have left this to totoally the last minute. Try getting a few lightweight food items which he can use to liven up his rations. My brother is going into the paras soon and i've got him a whole load of anglo bubbly because we always used to get it from the corner shop as kids (individually wrapped bubble gum pieces).
Soldiers have boring diets so anything you can think of to add to his meals like maybe a pot of spicy seasoning, some powder sachets for drinks like lemonade or cocoa, some of those stretchy sour sweet stick things... anything that's lightweight and flavoursome! i reckon that's your best bet.
i would say to get him one of those customised bullets to 'keep him safe' (he will own the bullet with his name on it, so can't get shot) but the company i used for my brother's is abroad and prob won't arrive in time. But if you have time to look round for something he can keep on him to treasure, then maybe a nice penknife or letter writing set or family photo set in something waterproof, something like that.

I can't open your link, sorry but is this the type of cone you are looking for? (scroll down to bottom of page) http://www.fredaldous.co.uk/shop-online/polystyrene-shapes.htm
I've seen them in garden centres too - I got one as a present one year which had loads of tiny mixed, green, red & tartan ribbons and small silver baubles studded over it. Had a go at making a small one but didn't have narrow enough ribbons, so it didn't look as nice as the original
On the subject of sweeties, have also had some Christmas tree decorations made of an S shaped wire with sweets ( the type that have twisted wrappers) wound around the end with sparkly pie cleaners
*** ah, i can open it now and see that it is the same kind of cone *** 0 *** 0

You could get a black bucket and stick white florist ribbon in stripes on it - that's if you need another bucket, otherwise I would go with the shoe boxRustyFlange wrote: »Thanks for the replies. I will use a shoe box then. I just thought it was probably pointless looking for a basket and spending money on a basket when he won't use it ... although I get to use it again for someone else after christmas so it really wasn't an issue I guess.
I am all excited to get started now!0

Well my baskets are a long way from finished but I am loving this thread so hope you don't mind if I post anyway
I think I am going to do a 'girls' night in' basket for each of my good friends. Tesco has some good films cheaply so I picked up Clueless, Romeo and Juliet and Dreamgirls for £3 each  and I have some of the microwave popcorn, if I just put 1 sachet in it works out at 34p each for them. I figure if I keep picking up little bits it won't be such a shock when I get nearer to Christmas.
Thanks for the great ideas, especially on presenting everything, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for a while! :TGod is good, all the time

Hi Sian, that's what I've done with lots of mine, picked bits up here and there rather than go out with a purpose to buy loads of presents in one go  If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain :wave:0  If you want the rainbow, you've got to put up with the rain :wave:0
