But they were trying to mitigate a mistake. Mistakes are allowable arguments in reviewing contracts. The dealer notified the OP as soon at the mistake was identified and [STRIKE]offered to return his money. [/STRIKE] asked for more money to rectify the garage's mistake

I know this is an extreme analogy, but one to make the example clear. If the mistake had been far bigger and by accepting the contract the difference in value would have sent the dealer bankrupt, would you be as sure that he should "honour" the terms of that contract? Or would you agree that mistakes happen and let's try to figure out the best way to alleviate their impact.

If a mistake is what it was:cool:

The way I read the whole situation is as follows:
Dealer and OP agree price for car including trade in.
Dealer then realises he's offered incorrect trade in price and phones OP.
OP says he doesn't want to pay the additional £400(going by posts on here I presumed the OP made out to the dealer he didn't have the additional £400).
Dealer spots an opportunity to get out of deal by either forcing OP to pay an additional £400 (and suit the dealer), or refund the deposit and cancel (and suit the dealer).

So I took the garage offering to refund or continue as is as not a "friendly gesture" but more of trying to captilise on someone they thought may be vulnerable.

In my opinion, the option given to the OP was a rip off because the garage knew they were in the wrong.

    makes sense to me.

I still dont understand how a contract can be formed deposits exchanged and the Dealer doesnt have to stand by it.

The customer is not allowed to make a mistake and cancel the deal but the dealer is !!!!

One of the reasons for going back to a 4x4 is i am partially disabled and a higher car makes it easier to get out ,not so with the picaso.

Next time you pass a citroen dealership pop in and try the C4, It has a high floorpan and seat height good for people like yourself.

NOT BEING RUDE DONT READ WRONG PAGES IN BOOKS GUIDS OR WHAT AND IF YOU DO GET SOME TESTS DONE AS YOU HAVE A PROBLEM.The guy who i first delt with used to own the garage, sold it to the one now claiming to be the managing directore who phoned me Sunday. The first one stayed on as his salesman so should be experienced in pricing i would have thought. If he wrote the right car on receipt ,then surely must have read right one in book as well, maybe another needs tests. But sorted now deposit returned customer lost ,and i feel sure with the people i talk to will cost a lot more than £400 at the end of the day .

Indeed, this is how reputations are lost, and all because they were too pig-headed to absorb their own !!!!-up.
