Eating in Edinburgh

My favourite restaurant in Edinburgh is Sambuca
It's quite small, but it does amazing-tasting Italian food in a friendly and unpretentious atmosphere at affordable prices.
For sushi I like Sushiya, which again, is a bit small, and they do have a tendency to rush you out of the place once you're done, but the food is top notch.
And for tapas I like Cafe Andaluz on George Street.0 -
For very friendly service, a pleasing range of food and great value - "reds" in Portobello High Street. Been there a few times now and never been disappointed. Also is child frindly with play area for children.
Variety of dishes - not your bog standard "Indian ", "Italian" or "Chinese" - a nice variety of sensibly priced food. Oh, and a bottle of Harvey's Aussie Stamp red for £9.99? How much would a bottle of "branded red" be in the city centre?.
Non-chain, friendly places like it deserve to be supported, particulary in tight times like this!
Wild Rover0 -
I'd like to recommend Red Fort on Drummond Street - South Clerk Street end of Chambers Street. They do a daily lunch buffet with great choices veggi/hot/salad/2 rice dishes plus one soft drink and eaither tea/coffe or ice cream for dessert. How much......................less than £7 and half price for children. it's become our new Jimmy Chungs!0

We were in Ediburgh last week. Stayed at The Witchery for 1 night and the accommodation was to die for and I would go back there again, but we were very disappointed in their restaurant
Considering what we were paying for the privilege the service was poor and although the starters was ok, and the dessert was really good, our main course was awful - way undercooked duck [still quacking] and the waitress told us that potato dauphinoise would accompany the duck and the cabbage. This was not true so we had almost raw duck and 1 cabbage leaf as a mains. It is the first time I have left a restaurant hungry and not enjoy a meal
I preferred Jimmy Chungs where for just £10.99 we were so full we waddled back to the hotel!!!!
Bella Italia was good and very popular.
Filling Station has good food but quite noisy, and Wee Windaes had ok food.
Cranstons restaurant in the Old Waverley hotel wasn't too bad0 -

After my last meal at the Witchery (summer 2008) I swore I'd never go back. It may be the most beautiful and atmospheric restaurant in Edinburgh, but the food was very poor and nothing like the standard it used to be. Like fluffybishop we were still hungry at the end of it. When I want a special meal I now go to the Kitchin in Leith, taking care to resist ordering their expensive aperitifs:o..0 -
best fish and chip place in Edinburgh has to be the Tailend on Leith Walk. is £5.50 for a fish supper i think but they do special fish of the day too, had monkfish the other day when i was in for £9.50.
they cook everything fresh in front of you and is good for a takeaway treat0 -

Wow, nice blog. I am also a big fan of Manna House and Tailend Chippy.
Never even heard of the ice-cream newsagent in Comely Bank and I live nearby - will be trying that one out soon as I am a big ice-cream fan.
Keep meaning to try the Bakehouse and the Tea Tree place sounds great (a few people have recommended it to me) although the name reminds me of that potent australian essential oil - definately not something you would want to drink!
Have you tried Wellington's coffee (tiny but great coffee) [corner of Hanover and George Street] and eteaket (another good tea shop with a terrible name!) [Frederick Street] - those are two of my favourites on this side of town / near Princes street, when I fancy a tea or coffee and a bite. I wish more people would support the good local places rather than just going to Costa or Starbucks all the time..."The happiest of people don't necessarily have the
best of everything; they just make the best
of everything that comes along their way."
